How long has it been since you used/had physical cash?

This coming from someone who about exclusivly uses about 99% of the time my own bank card to about anything, outside places that doesnt offer card payments in the wild inner norway some times.

This probably hits different than what norwegian physical cash means anymore but im interested to learn if others use it more or less

 

How long or is this not a thing in different countries?

I have a $5 bill in a drawer, but haven't used physical cash in awhile. Almost everything I buy is online.

Yesterday, and Saturday. Cash is cool for many face to face transactions of low $ value.

It breaks up the trail of breadcrumbs we leave around everywhere.

I have used it to pay for virtual money at the ATMs for years. 

Seriously though. I only have received physical money only when selling PC parts. Can't remember when I last bought something fo cash.

 

Edit: now I actually recall buying RTX 3070 a couple of months ago, but thats it.

I've been carrying around the same $50 bill for about 5 years now. Everything I do is via card. Especially since the pandemic, some places don't accept cash any more or want exact change. I've found myself now reacting to people paying with cash in line as I once did with people paying by check (sigh, exasperation). It's really does take longer to pay with cash, especially for many people that can seemingly do basic math.

I pay a certain recurring living expense in cash every month, so I handle a lot of it...

 

There's also a couple restaurants around me that are cash only (and really tasty), so I keep some cash around for that.

 

Also, back in non-pandemic days, one of my hobbies would have swap meets that were also cash only (hopefully they'll be back soon, I miss getting deals I things I don't need).

 

Oh, and I collect star notes, so there's that, too.

I had the same $100 Bill for months before purchased some items with it. Most of time I perfer smaller Bills since they easier to spend.

 

I only use Prepaid Debit cards and Credit Card for bigger ticket items and online.

Before the pandemic hit, the only time I really used physical cash money-dollars was at the pub! While the big chains have fast and efficient card readers that are acceptable to use on a busy Friday night, the smaller ones... well, don't. They're finicky, slow, and hold everybody else up, so it's usually best to pay with cash.

 

But I haven't been to a pub in a year and a half now, so I just haven't used any cash. I still have the same £10 note left over from the last time I went out!

Try going into a small, local pastry shop and buy a "palmera de chocolate" (I think they're called palmiers in the US?) and pay with a card.

I use cash instead of my debit card for small, low cost things I buy from/sell to friends at school. So yesterday I bought a custom cable from someone, couple days prior someone bought some DDR2 I had because "it looked cool"

I'm slowly using up cash, haven't taken any out in a very long time, but have a stockpile from selling bits. Might just pay it into a bank, which is something I've not visited in over 10 years.

 

For private in-person sales it seems to be in general decline, as more want to use bank transfer or paypal. 

 

Shops, most take card now. Some smaller places still don't.

 

It makes splitting a bill at a restaurant easier than the game of pass around the card machine.

 

So for sure, cash is on the way out, but it isn't quite gone yet.

I will almost never take out cash but i always keep like a $100 with me for emergencies or I am going to a venue where they may or may not have debit/credit machines. The only time time I use cash in regular life is if I have a side job with someone who pays me in cash.

I have my credit card on my phone, so I just bring the phone close to the card reader when I pay something ... but I still have some cash in my pocket, because some sellers don't take cards or, for example, at work one of the girls places a lunch order for anyone interested and it's easier for everyone to pay her cash.

I always have cash on me. I paid for a GPU in cash at a flea market on Saturday, so that's the most recent time as of now. I still have plenty of uses for cash, and as nice as cards are I don't see myself without cash for a long time.

i still use physical money for everything. partly bcs the fact that almost 70% of ppls here still can't be bothered to switch to e-wallet. but mostly, bcs e-wallets here r complete garbage. not always tho. at first, e-wallets here offers many promos n stuff from cashbacks, discounts, free delivery for foods on GRAB / GOJEK, etc. now, for me at least, i only use them for online shopping and that's it. there's not much difference, price-wise / value-wise, which is why, i dont think going thru the extra steps of topping up ur e-wallet to go get some food & some other daily needs is worth it anymore

A few days ago... most snack restaurants and bakeries around me only take cash. I prioritize cash over card in case I need money in the card for an online purchase, for example... if I have to use my card I use my phone to pay which is quite convenient instead of fussing around with my wallet

Any reason for that? Here in the US you could take a walk or go the Store and Carry Out. But they had to limit the number people allowed to enter, and wear face mask.

I use cash quite frequently as some of my income is paid in cash.  Easier to spend a couple hundred dollars than going to an atm. 

I won $150 in cash from a lotto last week, bought $140 of groceries today.  Gave my nephew $50 bill for his birthday.  Gave my son the change from groceries for his piggy bank, he learns how to count and saves money for his games.

It'll be a long time before we abolish cold hard cash, at least 20 maybe even 50 years.

 

On the other hand, 98% of my transactions are paperless.  The pandemic has helped coax several of my customers into using digital methods

Last time I used cash would’ve been this morning when I bought breakfast. I 98% of the time use cash.

 

I heard somewhere when you hand over cash it actually causes minor pain, thus causing you to spend less. Card doesn’t cause pain, you spend more.

Most of the time I use my credit cards and pay them off every month.  But I keep several thousand dollars available in cash hidden away.  Mainly when a hurricane hits and you need certain supplies, the digital payment systems are usually down. So cash is king.  Also I tend to pay cash at smaller mom and pop style businesses because they will usually not charge sales tax. So I save a bit of money and they keep it off the books which saves them money.
