Auto focus?

I'm not a photography person, but that jumps out to me.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

What camera? Depends - on DSLRs there is usually a switch on the lens if it's a detachable lens - if not it's on the chassis near the lens.

When I get an acronym I don’t recognize I Google it.  The problem with such things is thare are often a bunch of word strings that come together to form the same acronym. Anything with U at the beginning is often at least also a “university of..” for example whether that is what it means in that usage or not.  As a result if find “the urban dictionary” to also often be helpful. I often see it used as “as F@¢k” as in “it’s hot AF right now” the thing about acronyms is they can be a lot of things.  One sort of has to guess at what the user means.  Can be very annoying. Merrimack Webster for example https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/af

has Air Force, audio frequency, and auto focus but not that one I used, whereas dictionary.com https://www.dictionary.com/browse/af

has only the one I used.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Normally there is a ring on the lens that you can turn to change focus. The manual should tell you which ring. Most modern lenses have a focus ring, and a zoom lens if its a zoom lens.

Fair point. I photography auto focus would be the most appropriate.

depends on the lens.

But some lens focus by the focus ring is connected to the gears and thus the motor.

Potentially. Especially if the lens has plastic gears.  Some things react poorly to being effectively pushed from the wrong end.  Sometimes it just won’t work or you’ll strip the gears pushing it. I think I eventually turned AF off on lenses I used that had it except in specific circumstances where that extra sharp perfect focus was hard to get.  It was all film cameras with auto focus features so early stuff though.  I don’t know how it works now.  There were probably changes.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

This. If you can feel resistance and hear the motor go 'bzzz', you should put it on MF>
But that's very much yesterday's technology. On modern day lenses there's usually no physical connection anyway.
