US states to accept driver's licence on iPhones

Summary

8 US states will roll out the use of electronic ID on iOS. Drivers licences etc will all be accepted this way. Airport security will be first on the lis..

Eight US states will accept driver's licences and other state IDs stored on an iPhone, Apple has announced. 

The feature, first announced at a presentation in June, lets iPhone users store IDs in the Wallet app. 

Some had expressed privacy concerns about handing over smartphones to police or security officials. 

Apple now says users do not need to unlock or hand over their phones for the system to work for airport security. 

But it remains unclear if or how it might eventually work for other uses of ID, such as drivers stopped by police.

Arizona, and Georgia will introduce the system first, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah also signed up. 

The "first locations" to use the system will be airport security checkpoints run by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Apple says.

Americans usually need some form of state ID only to travel by air domestically, unlike other countries, in which a passport is widely used.

Tapping a phone at an identity reader at supported airports will prompt passengers to use their Face ID or fingerprint to authorise sending information to the machine.

"Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID," Apple said. 

TSA administrator David Pekoske said the new system "will enable a more seamless airport security screening experience".

 

 

 

My thoughts

While some will see this as a further erosion of privacy I personally think we are way past that stage. I am not adverse to having a National ID for instance like much of  Europe already have. Some countries already have all their health data stored on a smart card for instance and they think it odd that we in the UK don’t have that. To me, this kind of technology hopefully will make life easier, and more secure. What I do find odd is that only Apple is mentioned, not Android. Will there be a version for Android too? Is that platform not deemed secure enough by the US? There really is a lot tho think about before I decide whether this is a good or bad idea.

Doesn’t that already happen every time we use a store card, a debit card or other digital payment? Loyalty schemes etc are tracking our every move already.

In many countries our number plates are already scanned and compared to a list of flagged ones. I doubt this kind of tech will lead to any increase of stops. If you are stopped then surely this will speed things up.

It's more about the fact that those examples are optional, you can pay with cash, not use loyalty cards, etc. but the concern is that this could become mandatory allowing for more in depth tracking by the country (worst case of course). One would hope it doesn't get that far but you know how governments and power are, give them an inch and they'll run you over with it, back up, fine you for being hurt, and then arrest you for not paying fast enough 😛

Not sure it would become mandatory to own a phone, or install a particular app. It may become useful. As with any new tech, it will probably have issues and that is more of a worry. Is it not already mandatory to carry a driving licence in the US when you drive? It is not here in the UK, instead the force can just look you up on their own systems, check the mot, tax and insurance on your car etc almost instantly.

Me too. I don’t live in the US so currently it doesn’t affect me. Any new changes where personal information is concerned is met with fear and I understand that. Whether that is justified or not has yet to be seen.

In my country, basically yes. Cash is near as much is dead. That's one of the things people from the US or other countries where cash usage is bigger or more common comment on. The Slippery Slope is now a proof statement, if you can align the assumptions properly, considering Power Grabbers are Power Grabbers and will lie about anything for it. (Insert favorite quote from any Political Philosopher in the last 3000 years.) Thus what also matters is the reaction and the counter-forces. In this case, I really doubt they'll want to go down the route of mandating. Why? Well, between vote fraud & illegal immigration, I can see a lot of uses for the technology that doesn't favor those that want to grab power. Rather, it might cost them some.

 

As a result, while a worry, I suspect this will just be a digital version of ID that works like normal one, making some stuff more convenient. But, we shall see.

The social security card just a piece of paper with simple number and name, I don't know why not make social security to be digital. I think people using social security more than ID or driver license.

I'm sorry but I would rather not have my social security card digital because if a hacker were to get my ssn then it would be a huge problem. With a paper card you can keep it in a safe place and only use it when you need it. I hardly ever have to use the physical card so I don't really see how having my ssn number on my phone would make my life any more convenient. It would likely just make losing my phone or having my phone compromised 1000% worse.

If a hacker can access the government database their checking against your boned either way, they can just change the details to match.

This is the US your talking about, they have a thousand different police forces all with their own records and systems. At the risk of turning political, the way the US is organised on pretty much every level is horribly inefficient, (by design mind), bear it in mind with discussing anything like this.

Same in Canada.

 

People would (unless they are literately afraid of technology) would rather have less things to carry around, and the smartphone already replaces a camera, video camera, notepad, checkbook, credit card, and hundreds of loyalty cards, bus passes, etc.

 

Basically the only four items that I would need to carry in addition to the cell phone right now would be the drivers license, birth certificate, taxpayer number card, and passport, and really I don't need to carry around all of those, only one of them, depending if I'm in the country or outside the country. The other three items would be much more convenient to be digital, even if they needed a PIN to show.

Your social security number is almost certainly on a number of systems already.  This I could be just one local copy on your own device then encrypted for your backup. I would have thought it is a lot harder to get hold of should you be burgled or mugged. In those cases all the their needs to do is read your number.

 

I also know that people do store images of their license, PIN numbers, bank details, SSN and more on their devices already, but often in less secure ways such as simply taking an image or as numbers in their phone book. These can be left unencrypted in backups so are vulnerable. Having a system that recognises these and protects them by default surely has to be better?

I have tin beside my bed and I just dump my coin in it every night.  It always tally's somewhere between $400 and $700 every 3-5Months.     The thought of refusing that much several times a year sounds bonkers.
