My New Gaming Monitor

mynameGeoff

Thanks to AORUS for sponsoring this video!

Check out the AORUS FO48U Gaming Monitor
On Newegg (PAID LINK): https://geni.us/E5L7

Why pay a premium for an ultrawide monitor when you can get extra flexibility on an OLED screen? The AORUS FO48U Gaming Monitor uses the same panel as the 48" LG C1 but with all the creature comforts of a modern PC monitor.

My Thunderbolt 3 dock does support DisplayPort 1.4, but I wonder whether I can push that much bandwith over Thunderbolt 3.

I just found out about 1080p ultrawide that I'd consider buying for the price - MSI Optix MAG301RF -聽200Hz IPS.

Never preferred ultra wide but that is cool one...

...erm a bit offtopic, but ultra-wide is not dead I meant.

It looks pretty amazing, but 48" flat is just too large when sitting that close.聽 The edges always get a shadow effect.聽 I have the LG聽43UD79-B and it does the same thing.

I'm waiting for manufactures to get a clue and release a proper 43" curved 16:9 4K monitor.聽 That would be my forever monitor.

Samsung released 32" one, but it has a terrible stand and no vesa mount support!聽聽

Why did Linus think it was awkward to have the Asus ROG wallpaper on the Gigabyte monitor but not on the LG monitor? Especially when the LG monitor beat out the Asus one before?聽

was this the 2 generation of OLED being used? the one that has backlight to reduce the brightness on the organic material while increasing general brightness or does it mainly focus on using this switching "feature/protection".

Still not something I would buy, compared to other solutions. (maybe future Gen 3 or 4 of OLED tech)

Does @LinusTech聽plan to find a new thunderbolt dock that supports 4k144hz? I recently upgraded to the LG 27GN950 and have a similar issue. I want to run by Corning TB3 optical cable to my closet PC, but I'm struggling to find a dock that can support 4k144

So this is basically a 38 inch ultrawide that's been stretched to make it a 16:9 - I can see the appeal of having a single screen like that, but I would skip on this particular one for a few reasons:

1. OLED vs IPS. Burn in is a big issue on a monitor and this is something IPS excels at and OLED absolutely sucks at. And while you may be thinking I GOT THIS all it takes is one incredibly stupid mistake and your panel is forever ruined. I could think of many more creative ways to blow $1500 if that is what you want to do LOL

2. PPI isn't specified in the specs but I'm going to make a guess that it's "around" the 100-120PPI that's ideal. A smaller 34 inch ultrawide does exactly 110PPI at 3440x1440 which is what I like to call "Windows friendly" and won't hamper your productivity. When text is too small to read at 100% scaling and icons become difficult to make out you know you've made a bad monitor choice. If you're struggling with a 32 inch or smaller 4K panel you will know what I am talking about.

3. Flat vs curved. Once you hit a certain monitor size curved panels are just the better choice to go with and one MAJOR differentiator between TV's and monitors. Never mind that you can STACK a pair of curved monitors and get the same or higher pixel real estate as a big flat TV. Given that this isn't operated like a TV and you will be sitting in front of it for many more hours I would be shopping for a proper curved monitor instead, or just stack two and be done!

4. Branding. Aorus is cool and I have nothing against them, but they just don't carry the weight that a brand like LG has in the monitor space. Can Aorus maintain their warranty? Will they still be able to support it when the warranty expires like LG does? Will you still be using it after 6+ years or does this become a throwaway like those first gen 4K panels were back in 2014? I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to be buying a new monitor every 3-4 years just because "unplanned obsolescence" became a thing or the manufacturer dropped the ball on quality control (thanks Gigabyte:old-grin:)

Increasing pixels alone doesn't get you a better monitor, and it seems that is what again has happened here with this Aorus. Higher refresh rates are cool but that's been around for many years now. Being "first to market" with a product that has unique specs is one thing, but I also don't want to be the end user who gets cut by that bleeding edge. For that reason alone you can be certain LG is working on a BETTER competing product... one that will also be curved and rock IPS for that color accuracy. THAT'S the monitor you guys will want to be interested in!

I do see the point of it over a LG OLEDs since you can do 4k 120hz with a 20 series card.聽 With the LG TVs聽you need a 30 series card for HDMI 2.1.

Can somebody explain to me why the second USB input was type B? Doesn't that just make it difficult to use and require somebody buying an adapter?

It's just USB A to USB B, so as long as you have a Type A port then you're fine

Exactly my point! (?)聽

Why would they make the two inputs USB A and USB B when they could just make them both USB A.

Maybe they got a good deal on a weird hub? Maybe there is some common use case where USB B is used??

I know you search it already but usb B is more of devices/slave type connector while a is more of host type connector...
