Between scalpers and cryptocurrency miners, its been really tough to buy a graphics card. But soon, we could see a flood of used mining GPUs hitting the market- possibly at some pretty attractive prices. But should you buy a second hand GPU that's been used for crypto mining?

Hopefully this stops the spread of misinformation people have on mining. I'm still not sure why people hate it so much as every crazy claim against it I've seen has been proven to be wrong. Also a side note the clickbait title directly contradicts what the video has to say and only perpetuates misinformation.

To be fair, a one to one comparison like this isn't that insightful, since variations between the dies themselves can effect performance a noticeable bit.

 

In regards to degradation of silicone chips. Well, it is a bit complicated to be fair. Though, most aging would happen before it even leaves the chip factory itself. To be fair, a chip sits for literally hours in a good few hundred degrees C as part of various manufacturing steps. So the transistors are already somewhat aged by that point, so they won't drift in specs much throughout their life. (unless one is a voltnut (A person that owns an HP3458A or similar), then it drifts fast enough for the Deja Vu meme to be applicable.)

 

There is however another aspect of chip degradation that is a bit more serious. And that is copper migration. This might be a surprise to a lot of people, but copper is poison as far as semiconductor junctions are concerned. The last bit of metal that connects between the transistors and the overall interconnect fabric is generally made of either Tungsten (doesn't care in the slightest about moving) or Aluminium. (a semiconductor that will form a junction of its own and at times contribute to the specs of a chip.)

 

But copper migration isn't a major issue. Yes it does work its way through the diffusion barriers that is attempting to contain it and "stop" it from killing the chip, but this usually takes a good couple of years at 80-90C, and a mining card is usually not profitable long before that point. (though, slimming down diffusion barriers is a good way to gain a bit more performance, but the chip will die faster, so who knows, AMD/Intel/nVidia/etc might actually be playing this game. How would you test it? Take a 5+ year old chip that haven't seen any use and bake it in an oven at 100 C for a week at a time until it dies and compare it to a modern chip put through the same torture? Though, manufacturers would likely defend themselves with node shrinkages.)

 

But to be fair, the real thing that tends to kill most types of electronics is thermal cycling. Since the board and the chip don't expand at the same rate when heated, the joints between them will slowly yield and at some point fail. (Putting the part through the oven for 10 minutes at 250C is not the solution here btw... That if anything might just kill it more.)

 

In some regards, a mining card would have some advantages over a regular second hand card.

To be fair, it hasn't seen the same thermal cycling, it likely weren't used at "peak performance" but rather something closer to its peak power efficiency. (electricity isn't free.) And it were likely used in a more dust free environment, since dust frankly makes everything worse! (Except movie sets, there dust is literally a feature worth paying for.)

I'd be more concerned about GDDR6 and GDDR6X memory being degraded by heavy overclocks and running at 100c+ for months/years. I guess it would depend on the video card model and how they were kept cool.

 

The video is kinda silly checking just for the actual gpu frequency... would be worth comparing the fans, how noisy they are compared to a new card, the rpm of the fans (are the fans running at higher speed automatically adjusted by gpu bios to sustain that gpu clock?), how hot are the memory chips ...

 

Another risk is ... if the video card supports modded bioses like RX series did, is the card you buy from a miner gonna come with the original bios and overclocked settings reverted, or is it gonna be a bios that causes random game crashes (because memory timings are too low or whatever)

A good mining operation wouldn't overclock their cards, they would likely do the opposite.

Since power efficiency is a fairly major aspect of the profitability of a mining operation. Since electricity isn't particularly cheap in a lot of cases, especially if one factors in air conditioning costs to keep a room full of GPUs at a practical temp.

 

The power efficiency of any chip isn't a fixed value. But it rather varies depending on the workload and how much one pushes it. Adding a 5% overclock to a chip does usually give 5% more performance, but usually at a 10% increase in power consumption. Ie, power efficiency went down about 4.8% for an "ideal" CMOS based chip.

 

(Edit: Except, if one also runs an AC, then that too needs to handle 10% more energy, and thereby also use more power itself. Not to mention that a lot of mining operations have power as one of their largest expenses besides graphics cards. (but cards can be sold to recoup a good portion of their costs) So it isn't particularly wise to just dunk x% of one's profits straight into the drain. However, there is a point of peak profitability that is somewhere between peak power efficiency, and peak performance, since the time to get a return on an investment also effects how quickly one can invest in more and thereby scale out. But one doesn't have to be a genius to know that it isn't going to be economical to LN2 cool one's GPU for crypto mining, even though it gives spectacular performance.)

After all, a large portion of the cost for the GPU itself will come back when the minner sells it, since it won't be economical to run forever.

Reselling them is usually part of the operation, at least among the miners that I know.

For Ethereum mining, a few years ago when I last mined with RX 4xx and RX 5xx cards, the gpu chip was downclocked and the memory was overclocked (increase frequency and lower the timings, for example use timings from 1500 Mhz with 1900-2000 Mhz frequency).

The ethereum algorithm does a lot of memory operations, so a gpu miner launches multiple "scripts" in parallel on the video card cores which have to do A LOT of small memory requests. Basically, the gpu cores sat there doing almost nothing because the memory controller was busy waiting for the memory chips to retrieve data.

So, it was beneficial to decrease timings as much as possible, and increase frequency as much as possible. You could do it up to the point where you started to get read errors making the video card unusable with video games that had different pattern of accessing memory - reading bigger chunks of data, more continuous transfers, not very small transfers and lots of them. 

I remember even so, the gpu chips were doing nothing waiting for memory to catch up, so some mining software started doing two algorithms in parallel, ethereum and decred for example ... ethereum bit issued commands to read bits from ram, and the code knew that it would take 10 instructions or more (for example) until ram responds, so instead of doing "wait" commands, the program switched to doing decred calculations then switch back.

So you got increased power consumption because the gpu cores were kept more busy but overall it was more profitable to mine both coins at same time.

The thing is, the R9 290(X) is arguably a somewhat special case. This is very anecdotal but Hawaii was notorious for randomly artifacting/dying or the too well known issue of black-screening (was mostly caused by PSU wire gauge not being thick enough for those with 8+6/8+8), especially ones that were reference blower cooler and/or board. I mean my first (powercolor) 290X with reference cooler artifacted the second I installed it (had it RMAed).

If mining was killing cards then things like F@H would have been doomed over a decade ago LOL Yeah, you can argue the differences between algorithms but the basics are still the same - GPU performance at or near 100% running 24/7 with clocks just high enough to not kill the die.

 

Unfortunately even when you take care of a card they can still die - ports go bad, bad cooler mount kills the die, bad thermal paste application, too high factory OC kills the die, card dies ONE DAY out of warranty, your GIGABYTE power supply kills the card :old-tongue: A lot of things can happen that go out of your control and that's a real issue now when finding replacements is damn near impossible.

 

I run dedicated custom water in my system so my cards rarely go over 55C even on the hottest of days. But since I also run four cards I keep the clock speeds to the highest common denominator across the four and take it back another ~100MHz just for good measure. That's important because you don't want one card running balls to the wall with three others playing it safe.

 

I'm looking forward to the day when I can upgrade my 980Ti's, but I know it won't be happening any time soon. That means I'll also need to keep them running for probably another 18 months looking at the current conditions, and these are cards that are already 4+ years old. They will have definitely served me well for the $800/pop I paid for them.

I'm not all against miners, but these GPUs are specifically not intended for mining.

 

Yes, people can use their stuff however they want. But mining is not the intended usecase for GeForce GPUs. That's why the specific mining GPUs are a thing. Mining isn't the only reason for the GPU shortage for consumers but no one can deny that it's a big reason. (With Etherium price basically directly impacting GPU pricing) If miners would stick more to mining specific GPUs the normal consumer market would have more (but likely still not enough) supply of gaming GPUs. (Yes, i know there are valid arguments why a GeForce GPU is more attractive to miners with one being the resale value but that doesn't change my argument.)

 

So what i'm trying to say is that i can somewhat understand the thought process behind gamers feeling more "entitled" to receive these GPUs. The current situation is just very frustrating for many people. And with most governments panicking and issuing lockdowns people "need" GPUs more than ever to stay sane when being basically locked up at home not having much else to do. (Not trying to get political, just an example!)

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

TBH how can we even trust LMG on this as well? Back in one of their lounge videos not too long ago Linus admitted that they were in fact mining on cards they are not using for videos, so how do we know one of those "new" cards have never been mined on or weren't directly pulled from mining? Just because it came out of a box? For all we know they could be comparing apples to apples, instead of apples to oranges like they should be.

I hope im wrong with this, but honestly, i highly suspect that, by the time the "inevitable GPU price crash" happens with the flood of used cards hitting the market, the GPUs that do go up for sale will be so under-powered performance wise vs the newest generation it wont be worth buying, and the 'new' cards will still be priced at the outrageous prices we've seen for the last 2 generations, with $1000+ gaming cards in tiers where they should be $600-$700.

Yes, but back then they were less concerned with efficiency and more concerned with raw MH/s. As such, the cards were heavily overclocked and run HARD at high temperatures. Cards from that era of mining were heavily abused and prone to failure.

 

Nowadays, efficiency trumps all, so the cards are usually underclocked and run at very safe temperatures; far lower than typical gaming loads. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a mining card today.
