Mounting a new cooler

Ammitzboell

Im upgrading my cpu cooler from a stock Amd cooler to a Be quiet Dark rock pro 4. This is my first time ever doing somthing like this. I am unsure if its doable to mount it without taking the motherboard out of the case?

Some advice would be much appreciated 😊

Remove the back panel and see if there is a cut out. Its a bit risky trying without as the back plate might drop and some coolers still come with custom back plates.

What if i put the case on its back like i would with the mother board? But it might not be worth the risk to not just removing the motherboard 😅

I've reseated and swapped coolers with the motherboard in place, as long as the case has a nice cutout and removable side panel you're fine.  It's nice that the motherboard is solid and stationary vertically IMO.

I find it easier this way than when the motherboard is free as I don't like resting it on it's face to get at the back and I don't like balancing it in its edge to keep it vertical.

1. Turn off your power supply switch.

2. Touch a heating element in your house or anything else, which is connected to earth to prevent electro static charge.
3. Open the side panel behind your motherboard and see if you can reach the holes, where the CPU cooler is mounted.
4. If you cant reach them, unplug you motherboards cables, remove the graphics card and remove the mother board.
5. You can remove the graphics card anyway, so you have more room to work in.
6. Remove the current CPU cooler. If there is thermal paste or something else on the CPU, remove it with a tissue and maybe some ethanol.
7. If there is plastic peel on the new CPU cooler, remove it.
8. If there is no thermal paste on the new cooler already, put a pea sized dot of thermal paste on the CPU and install the new CPU cooler on it. I recommend tighten the screws in a cross pattern, like when you change a tire on your car, so the paste spreads equally.

9. Put everything back together, switch on the power supply and enjoy.

Yes have thought of that, and it seams that if i remove the fan it would make enough room for changing or adding ram sticks 👍🏻

But i was also surprised how hefty a chonker she was 😂🍑 but their website said the smaller Dark rock 4 (non pro) might have some ram clearance issues, so it might be a bit over board with the cooling.

The nice thing is its the most quiet thing in my setup now, and i haven’t had temperatures over 36 celsius since on the cpu 😂👌🏻 Even while gaming.

What games are you playing?  36c doesn't seem realistic when gaming, but depends what you're playing I guess.

Either way, glad you got it all set up properly.  May want to work on dust control though.
