CyberDog is a new ominous-looking robot from Xiaomi

TheReal1980

Summary

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has unveiled a quadrupedal robot named CyberDog: an experimental, open-source machine that the firm says “holds unforetold possibilities.”

Quotes

Quote

The release of CyberDog by Xiaomi is very interesting, though not necessarily as a product in its own right. Instead, it says a lot about the current robotics landscape and the accessibility of this tech.

Quote

The same press release highlights CyberDog’s “pet-like nature,” including its ability to respond to voice commands and follow its owner like a real dog.

Quote

CyberDog is capable of following its owner and darting around obstructions,” says Xiaomi. The machine can also respond to voice commands, including recognizing wake words and instructions, or it can be controlled using a connected smartphone app.

My thoughts

Hmm... this robot looks a lot like Spot from Boston Dynamics... like really similar. Or am I dreaming?

I couldn't help but think of a Dog from HL2 while reading the article.

It sure its cool but not practical in any way. Still... it would be fun going on street with it and see peoples reactions.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Just because it looks very similar to the Boston Dynamics robot it doesn't mean its built the same.

We don't even know how well its built, if it's waterproof, etc...

But if its truly fully open source then it may be good enough even if its just a copy.

I've played too much Horizon: Zero Dawn to see how this one ends..

May we all end up in the same tribe.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I first thought this is just gonna be a render / concept / hype thing (like that Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha Pro).
But I gotta say these real life demos are looking fine:

I have always wondered what the point of something like this is. I mean when I think of robots I think of things that will do something useful and not a cheap imitation of a dog. I would think something like this would be cool to look at and interact with for a couple of hours bit after that I would like get sick of it.

its meant to enter areas too dangerous for humans and too unstable for drones.

copy open source solutions online and skin it so that the locals can be hyped???

I'm from China btw, but still. I think it is silly...

Thats the government model for protection against those damn imperialists of Tibet. Didn't they already launch a drone bird army for surveillance? "You sir are insane. You claim you were followed by 100 doves and attacked by 10 dogs after you said Taiwan is a country" :D

if you want to make money don't risk with new stuff, just copy others

besides most of the market it's like that, considering china and without considering china

all the same crap with slightly differences becomes new products

What did you expect out of 1,500$ robot?
You want the real deal, get Spot for 75,000$.

That's one part of it I don't like seeing - Depends on "What" unforseen possibilities being referred to by that statement.

And it reminds me of the Sovereign's "Diamond Dogs" on Venture Bros.....

Boston Dynamics makes a robot dog and everyone thinks it's the cutest thing ever.

Xiaomi makes a robot dog that's essentially a miniaturized Boston Dynamics dog and suddenly everyone has a shit-fit and thinks it's the scariest thing since skynet.

And you're assuming everyone likes that one too, I don't care for it either, just like the one this thread is about.

Rich people letting someone program it to bring beverages. I can guarantee that there are more than 100 people worldwide that can find a use for it.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
