Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro

I was going to buy a Zenbook, as they seemed to be a pretty good choice for me, but after digging into the resale value of Macbooks, I realize that while they cost a good bit up front, they only lose about $150 (USD btw) over a year or so of owning the laptop. I would get the 256gb version, and from my ebay-hunting and BestBuy pricing, both would lose about $150 in a year or so ($899 to $750 for the air, $1099 to $950 for the pro). I do some light gaming, and my recent love for GeforceNow has made it where MacOS can handle all my gaming needs, but I know the Pro has better cooling, so that might make a difference. I don't game much though, as most of my time is spent writing for school, or working. The price isn't a huge deal for me, and if you have any problems with my resale estimates, please do let me know. Do you think I should get the Pro, or the Air? Or possibly stay on windows. Portability and battery life are VERY important for me.

I have the m1 macbook pro.  Great laptop, but id get the air. You won't need the extra cooling.

 

Id get 16gb of ram if it was me though, and probalby 500gb of storage. Thats my config, and I kinda wish I went 1tb.

I've got cash right now, the name of the game for me is resale value. I'll look into a 16gb and 500gb version...

Ohh, the Air dosen't come with a 16gb variant. It's only option is the 256gb and the 512gb. I may still go with the 512, but I really don't need the extra storage. I don't download that much...

You can custom order from apple for a 16gb versin

Why is resale value a big issue? Id buy a good laptop and keep it for 5 years. No tech device is a good investment.

I know I don't have the self control to not upgrade my laptop pretty quickly (1-2 years), so might as well make it where I don't lose a bunch of cash later on...

Seems like a waste of money to me. Id just pick a laptop you want to keep for a while and stick with it. Laptops aren't really changing that quickly.

It is, and I know it is, but I just, idk, I can't help it xd. I'm prolly just going to go with an Air 512. I want to order from best buy for, err, several reasons.

If you are looking for resale value always go for the higher memory, storage, and CPU configs for apple laptops. The high end options especially memory always hold their value much better.

Yup, it usually boils down to since it's soldered and non user upgradable people want to buy used systems but with specs that support current computing. The 2015 macbooks are a great example as the 8Gb variant is essentially useless but the i7 with 16Gbs of RAM held it's value and still sorta does as it has ports and a real keyboard.

They lose a lot more than that. You're seeing those prices because there hasn't been the yearly(ish) refresh yet and because M1 has only been out for 9 months.

 

I bought my MacBook Pro a year ago, it's already lost about $700 in value. I could get around $3,000 now vs $3,700 new.

 

It's true that their resale value doesn't go through the floor like regular notebooks after a few years, but definitely don't expect it to only lose 10% year over year.
