  2. 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 64GB storage -- costs $32/£28 per user per month

  4. 8 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 512GB storage -- costs $158/£138 per user per month (but maybe only for businesses?)

In total, there are twelve Windows 365 cloud PC configurations to choose between, each offering a different level of performance and storage.

 

The pricing and configuration options are consistent across both Windows 365 Business and Enterprise. However, larger companies that qualify for the Enterprise branch will automatically benefit from a discount of $4.00/£3.40 per cloud PC.

 

It's also possible to try three of the different configurations (the most powerful of which has 4 vCPUs, 16GB RAM and 256GB storage) for free for a period of 60 days. However, the trial license is only available to one user per organization.

 

My thoughts

Compare Microsoft's pricing to AWS pricing here. This seems like a pretty fair comparison. It looks like Microsoft is subsidizing the lowest-spec entry level offerings to edge out Amazon. And Amazon's disk options over 100GB for the "user volume" cost $0.10/GB. Amazon does have some interesting Graphics and GraphicsPro options:

  1. 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM: Microsoft's 64GB disk is $20/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $25/month
  2. 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, Microsoft's 64GB disk is $32/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $33/month
  3. 4 vCPU, 16GB RAM, Microsoft's 128GB disk is $70/month vs. Amazon's 80GB+10GB disk is $70/month
  4. 8 vCPU, 32GB RAM, Microsoft's 512GB disk is $158/month vs. Amazon's 175GB+100GB disk is $140/month, note that to get a full 512GB user volume on Amazon would be $140+$41.2 = $181.20/month!

THey don't seem to have any gpu power, so your not playing games on these. There are much better services for gaming in the cloud.

Single core and 2G ram for a full on Windows experience doesn't sound that great. I really don't understand what the target audience is for all these.

This makes no sense. An Intel PC stick is way better than the first two trash options and costs ~140 USD.

They seem to include windows(probably enterprise) and MS Office, so thats about $400 there alone.

 

This should save IT time, so less time to manage the systems, so that saves labor costs. 

 

And one big feature is its one system that can be used anywhere, great for uses where users use lots of different systems. This would be much faster to switch users and better than something like user profile copying.

 

ALso would reduce cost of onsite servers to manage the  systems with things like AD

 

This is made for buiness, so you have to add the other costs of buiness pcs, not just the hardware

Keep in mind that if you're in a company that even knows why 1 vCPU is a bad idea, you're not the target market for that 1 vCPU offering.

 

There are many, many, many companies where the employees don't do more than respond to a few emails in a whole day. That 1 vCPU is targeted at them.

Still doesn't make any sense to me. You still need a computer to access the remote PC. Surely anything that can remote in to this virtual PC can do a better job natively than 1 CPU and 2GB of ram hosted halfway across the country.

In past work I've visited various financial institutions which typically have a setup where little runs locally. I guess it is part way to physical security. They use thin clients which is little more than a viewer. Not even i3 level, think Atom.

 

Other possible uses, maybe you just need a low performance server of some sort that is remotely accessible (bandwidth limits?), or a test environment if you can't run VMs locally for whatever reason.

In 2021, no offer should have less than 4 GB of memory.  Memory is relatively cheap and one time purchase, and nowadays it's available in big sticks of ram, so they can fill a server with sticks and make lots of virtual machines.

 

For example, they can make a server with 2 x  64 core Threadrippers and 768-1 TB of memory and host 128 virtual machines each with 4 GB of memory .. 20$ x 128  = ~ $2500 a month revenue, on a $5-7000 server and maybe 20$ a month in datacenter space and bandwidth and electricity

 

Sorry but no, marketing people probably forced the 2 GB option so people would be encouraged to go for the 2 core / 4 GB version.

I am fairly sure it does not include Office. You have to buy that separately. Windows 365 is just the virtualized client. Nothing more and nothing less from what I've heard and read.

my uni tried something similar, and men was it a horrible experience, the servers were running on E5 v4s 4 cores per vm, on a 100mbps connection link, they would take 5-10 mins just to reach the windows main page,
