YouTube tests a cheaper Premium Lite subscription tier

adarw

Summary

YouTube is currently doing a beta of "premium lite" in Europe, where its supposedly cheaper with $8.30 instead of the normal $12. You can only watch videos without ads, so no downloading and background watching

Quotes

Quote

YouTube is testing a budget-friendly version of its Premium subscription plan in Europe. The Google-owned video hosting site's Premium Lite plan offers ad-free viewing without additional Premium perks like offline downloads and background playback, as noted on ResetEra and Reddit.

My thoughts

I would rather use a ad blocker then give a huge greedy corporate my money. They are already getting huge amounts of $$ off of data.

I don't see how downloads and background playback isn't worth the small difference in price. I doubt this will succeed, but I could be wrong.

Lol paying for ad free anything is hilarious. Their are a million ways to block ads now.

For someone like myself it makes a lot of sense. I prefer to use the native YouTube mobile app, and I listen to things offline while driving. Some of my commute is through an area with no cell service, so it's nice.

I think downloads might be worth paying for, but being able to play videos while the screen is off is a stupid thing to charge for IMO.

And with there being ways to block ads for free I don't see the point in paying to not have ads.

downloading could be their own sub-subscription, while the basic one should at least include no ads and background or if it's offline viewing?

Like you don't need any additions to have those perks, unlike having to download something?

Also if someone downloads something, will this impact creators with way of marking the original and trying to strike the original creators that might have been going on for a while already? Makes me just want to use brave reward system.

Don't use vanced. A few months ago there were ban waves of vanced users. Also some of the sites that were hosting vanced were modified. If you don't care about your google account, only then use vanced.

People in this thread crack me up. YouTube premium is $18/5 accounts. That’s about $4/person/month. That’s literally 1 coffee A MONTH. For hassle free YouTube . No ads on tvs, tablets, phones. Downloads. Background (perfect for music or podcast type). YouTube music (which is kinda shit app but works okay enough). Ability to play any song using google home speakers, again no ads (show me the ad blocker that works for google home speakers). It’s truly an INSANE value of what you get.

and instead dummies here trying to save literally pennies with pirated apps. Lol. Do you also goto McDonald and take all their ketchups too?

This reminds me, YouTube was supposed to implement PiP for iOS for standard users. They were supposed to be rolling it out a month or two ago. Wonder if they backed out in favor of this? Sounds like something Google would do.

Why don’t you? Lol. I have a giant 4k tv, great speakers, and can use my fire stick 4k remote to watch YouTube / twitch / Disney etc all without needing to do anything . Zero noise from a pc and comfy seats. Watching videos on my desktop isn’t comfy

still hope they don't kill their movie library, some old classics on there and can be better than other services and you can pay the "right" price even if the price doesn't change much on there.

Smart tv apps don’t get updated and can vary a lot. Firestick 4k is fast with frequent updates. Casting from phone is annoying as it’s always not near me. And when I’m casting, I can’t watch other stuff on my phone. Plus pausing or rewinding is a pain when casting. A remote is much easier.

Nah I only take half the ketchup from McDonald's, a few salt and pepper packets, and a pocket full of straws. Also $4 isn't literal pennies it's $4 which instead of YouTube now I can spend that on coffee.
