Trying to get data off an old drive.

As I mentioned I am trying to retrieve data off an intact old drive. The problem is the adapter provides no power to the disk so nothing can be read and only connects to the sata bit. How can I provide power to the disk? The connector looks similar to a 4 pin fan header. Thanks.

Using this adaptor https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08XYJ4CFF but I believe it is only for data transfer so I need to find something to supply power to the drive.

It sounds like you're trying to use a 3.5" desktop drive. That adapter you linked cannot be used with a desktop drive as it doesn't provide 12V power, and as such it's meant to be used with 2.5" drives. You'll need an adapter like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-Cable-Drives-USB3-0-Drive/dp/B07G86M7KC/

 So I don't need to connect anything to the 4 pin thingy?

No. That's not a power connector, and it's not meant to be used. You'll need an adapter with a separate power supply, like the one I linked.

Sorry it says I will need to reformat disk and I will lose my data how can I avoid this?

Yes. It's a USB to SATA adapter, and it includes a power supply. Plug the adapter into your drive, connect the power adapter to the adapter and a wall outlet, then plug it into your computer through USB.

Not but I mean with the one you suggesting there are reviews saying you have to reformat the device to use it.

They're talking about the small connector just to the right of the SATA power and data connectors. It's not needed, and it's not a power connector. It's labeled "drive configuration port" in their picture.

You probably know somebody who owns a desktop,

You could just plug it in and get your data,

That adapter can only support 2.5 inch HDD (the one for laptops) and cannot work with 3.5inch (the bigger one for desktop).

 

5 V USB power supply makes it only support 2.5-inch mass storage class drives while cannot afford 3.5 inch HDD

 

If you have a desktop PC, you can just plug it inside the pc.
