Buying a laptop for school (kids going to college)

Budget (including currency): 1500ish usd

Country: us

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: school work 

 

Hi all 

 

This community was very helpful before so I thought I'd ask for advice again.   My oldest is going off to school for computer programming and needs a laptop.   The school requires/strongly recommends the following:

 

I7 or ryzen 5 (8 core plus)

4k display 

16gig ram

512gig storage ssd required

Dedicated gpu 4gig minimum 

 

I want to get her a good laptop that she can also game on and use recreationally but also doesn't put me in the poor house.  I am thinking of getting this laptop but am unsure. I know the reviews aren't perfect but for the price I'm having a hard time finding a better overall value.   Its 1399 usd Thought?

I don't recommend this laptop for a couple reasons:

 

The oled screen is nice and fun for a couple months and then a bunch of ui elements are permanently burned in. It also has a pretty noticeable impact on battery life.

 

The battery life is well not great. As in between 2 and 2 and a half hours when doing barely anything.

 

Wifi range is well just bad. They messed it up somehow.

 

I'd recommend a ryzen lenovo legion 5 2021 in the place. Can even go cheaper then because well I highly doubt your child will need such a powerful computer.

 

edit: the original price of that laptop was a fair bit higher but probably because of how bad it is it started dropping in price.

I personally would get an ultrabook and then build a desktop for the dorm or at home. Gaming laptops have come a long way but they still sorta suck for college. Ultrabooks can do 100% of anything you will encounter in Computer Science or a Software Developer degree track. The only exception is if you are doing machine learning as you will need a high end Nvidia GPU and maybe lots of storage depending on your data pool.  At which point you have your gaming PC in your dorm to use for that as I really wouldn't train on a laptop. The decision is up to you but for the same maybe ~$300 more you could have an ultrabook with gaming PC setup that will be much better than a do it all in one package gaming laptop.

 

I also find it hard to believe they suggest a 4k monitor. That's just someone copying and relaying some tech specs without actually knowing what or why. It happens all the time with college recommendations for laptops. Students will come with thick ass ASUS gaming machines and you'll end up using IntelliJ which can run on a chromebook

Whats hanging me up is the school really wants a 4k display (I'm guessing for readability for coding? Don't really know i drive truck for a living sooo outside of my wheel house)  finding a 4k display with a dedicated gpu is doable but every other option I've looked at is 2k plus

4k at that size makes little to no sense really. 1080p is totally fine here the pixel density is more than enough and with 4k you NEED to use windows scaling because otherwise everything will be too small to read.

This is the other laptop we were looking at.  The hang up was it was 1080p.  But yeah in a 15 inch laptop you'd probably not even notice a difference from 4k to 1080p.  Thoughts on a asus zephyrus?

I'd recommend the 15 inch for the bit bigger screen. It's also a lot quiter as the 14" will spin it's fan up a fair bit when plugged in even when doing almost nothing due to how much powerful hardware is in there. Also a heads up the ryzen 9 5900h(s/x) are barely any better than their 5800 counterparts due to basically being the 5800 but 100-200mhz higher but costing a lot more.

 

For coding the 16:10 lenvo legion 5's would also be a really nice thing to have.
