Something I think many people don't realize about USB 2.0 vs 3.x: All USB 3.x cables/ports include a USB 2.0 layer that is separate signaling from 3.x. If you plug USB 2.0 peripherals into a 3.x port, you're still using a USB 2.0 controller. USB 3.x hubs are technically two hubs in one chip (2.0 and 3.x) and the signals never mix.

The 2.0 layer can have weird incompatibilities though, as my cheap Mini-B to SD adapter demonstrated last night by throwing a weird error while trying to copy files.

I've had 2 steelseries mice not working properly on usb2 ports, but mainly the software didn't update the mice firmwares. Not issues while gaming.

A USB 2.0 port has 4 wires going to it, 2 for power and 2 for data, while a USB 3.0 port has 9 wires, 2 for power and 2 for data in the same position as USB 2.0. Along with 2 more pairs for data and an extra ground/shield pin. You can connect any USB 2.0 device to the 4 USB 2.0 pins on the 3.0 connector and it would function like normal.

 

No sensible peripheral manufacturer would want to invest the extra money into a USB 3.0 controller along with a 9 wire cable for a device that can barely utilize a fraction of the bandwidth of USB 2.0. Unless you have a keyboard with a fancy high speed pass through port/built in USB hub/other features that would require high speed data transfer.

This is probably one of the least thought out LTT vids I've seen in a while. They didn't even consider the other uses for this. Having an extra 2 usb controllers would be useful to me, im at the limit for devices so for me to use a new device I have to unplug another one. Also having a separate / other iterations of usb controllers can help with noise problems on things like DAC's where usb power noise is very audible.

 

If i had this board i would be able to plug in the 5 other devices that i constantly need to switch.

This motherboard should have been marketed for VR, as Linus struggled with USB problems and ended up getting a dedicated USB card because of the lower quality USB controllers typically built into motherboards:

 

 

I would actually like to see this exact product re-tested for this specific purpose and see if it's worth getting this motherboard over a dedicated USB card.

ASRock makes good boards, i am quite pleased with the 2 mini ITX PC i have with their motherboards.

 

This marketing about those gaming ports is a bit over the top.

 

Would someone be able to post a hwinfo pcie tree showing how those elledge 2 usb controllers are connected?
