display external storage folders on desktop

Aside from creating a shortcut, is there any way to store folders on an external hard drive, but show those files on the regular desktop without having to open the external hard drive?

I think he is referring to like how Linux and Mac put drive icons on the desktop when you connect an external drive. 

I don't know a way to do it off the top of my head.
