The $300 Holographic Photo Frame - Looking Glass Portrait

ColinLTT

This is really cool and the pricing is impressive.

I've ordered one, can't wait to try. I happen to have bought a used Lytro Illum some time ago so it should be pretty cool to see how those can work together since they're basically using the same tech in reverse.

Is the viewing angle on this thing worse for the Portrait, or is it just me? I remember LTT's showcase of it in 2019 looking a bit better than this.

EDIT: The Portrait has 58 degrees of view, about 5 degrees more. What in the hell?

Using some fancy lenses the Looking Glass Portrait is able to create 3D images like we're never seen before in a consumer device.

Buy Looking Glass Portrait at https://geni.us/LookingGlass

This does make a whole lot more sense as an advance than 480hz  screens.   I remember the dev kit video and it was quite exciting. They were talking about what was at the time more or less a maxed out consumer PC behind the scenes still huffing to keep up.  That the play equipment alone can be even held with that form factor is pretty impressive.  Says a lot about how much has been done.  How much extra equipment is needed now to use it as a monitor instead of just a picture frame? The level of equipment needed to run that dev kit isn’t easily acquirable even now.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

A bit more context is needed:

The thing is 31.5 inch.

Linus says he doesn't know how they handle the variable number of viewing angles, maybe you could deduce some more information by loading up a quilted picture with between 45 to 100 different photos (or block colours) representing each of the angles and see how it appears. You may be able to eyeball the results or you may have to use a steady camera and move it around the display.

Could see some of the effects in the video, but it didn't seem as great as the other ones.

Although it's cheaper, so I guess that is the reason and maybe easier to run? oh...

But would say it's still cool, even if the low viewing angles kind of hurts it's ability and saw in the video it looked destroyed when out of its perfect angles, in what is going to do and no "touch" or rather movement sensor being able to be connected and used together like in their first video? Lower price is also a thing and the much smaller design, still kinda wish for the TV they showed instead (even if it might be way too expensive and hard to run?).

This is a cheaper unit and a bit different tech, so some of it is not going to look the same.

Also well, it's going to be cheaper as the other versions was quite expensive as seen above.

My understanding is they don’t sell systems at all.

you can, that is IF you get a 15k hologram screen with a 5k PC as an addon, which too has a 3090 but with a bloody nuc with just 16gb of ram and a flipping 250gb ssd god knows if its even an nvme ssd
