Northbridge overheating after 5 years on MSI 970 Gaming motherboard am3+

Go to solution Solved by Jurrunio,

It's not 970 specific, back when northbridges are on their own a lot of the high end ones are hot parts. X58, 790FX, they all are. Imo it's the thermal paste under the heatsink gone dry after all these years.

Hi, I'm still rocking an MSI 970 Gaming motherboard, with the am3+ socket. I have an amd FX8350 cpu and an ASUS GTX 1080Ti

I've been rocking this setup for about 5 years or maybe more, but these last couple of weeks I've noticed my northbridge getting scaulding hot and my pc has been doing emergency shutdowns, likely because of that. I've googled the issue but as usual nothing comes up that's specific. Seems the MSI 970 Gaming motherboard has an issue with overheating northbridges, but I've had mine for years and never had a problem before.

I did cannibalise an old pc for a fan and stood it on top of my graphics card to blow air on the northbridge cooling fins, and it seems to fix the emergency shutdouws that I got before.

Is this a known problem? are more people experiencing this? Is my motherboard gonna self-destruct if I don't use an extra fan? Are more people likely going to have the same issue?
