When embeds go wrong. Hundreds of News Sites and Forums now link to porn

Thanks for pointing this out. It looks like a lot are just text references to vid.me, such as this post, but from a quick look there are some links that now redirect to pornographic content. The moderation team is going through them now. 👍

Just to clarify, the video links directed to dead pages that directed back to the pornographic websites home page. There were no embedded previews or autoplaying videos. It would still be reasonable to expect that someone may click on those links and unintentionally be directed to the pornographic website so the links have been removed.

Summary

Video and Image embed service Vidme went under and the defunct URL now points to pornography after being bought. Various news sites such as Huffington Post, New York magazine, The Washington Post, and a host of other websites now link to the pornography.

My thoughts

This is hilarious and a good example of link rot on the internet. You really can't trust external content at all as it can change at any time. I'm sure the company is making bank off ads being auto-loaded.

Not the first time I hear about buying out domains, but usually it's google.<nation> to be sold back for profit, not a common site to be used to link to porn instead...

What is even the solution, really? Even if they weren't embedded and just linked, it would still present basically the same issue. Linking to the archived version of a source could work i guess, but its not a perfect solution.
