Summary

Twitter is testing an upvote/downvote system. Currently the system is in beta for iOS users only. Twitter had played around with the system in November 2020

I hope that this manages to bring down to toxicity on the cesspool of shit that is twitter. Unlikely though

I can say that reddit seems less toxic than twitter to me. Every post on twitter has a stupid bts comment on it, some political nut, an average whataboutism fan and someone racist/sexist. At least you can see the top posts on reddit have a certain quality to them.

If you read the article that is basically what is going to happen. Only that they'll show the upvotes and that is it.

I agree with this forum's mod team that downvotes add nothing but toxicity. They're not as bad if they're only visible to you and used as suggestions for the algorithm I guess. Different reactions than just "like" or "dislike" would probably be a better addition.

I'd much prefer social media sites would include a button to express the sentiment of "who gives a shit?", so you can statistically evaluate just how little your opinion matters to people, instead of simply inferring that by the lack of reactions. Other than that, I don't see how down voting improves the experience. Since it only applies to replies, controversial or unpopular people who never reply and only use Twitter as a soap box for their agenda don't come into contact with it. Maybe it'll cut down on potential flamewars if people can just shoot off a down vote without having actually type an entire tweet, but that's about it.

The difference between reddit and twitter is quite large that a downvote system will not work on twitter.

 

Reddit: Posts are made to a subreddit/group where you likely share a common interest so the downvotes are based on the discussion of the topic (with the exception of a few subreddits)

Twitter: You follow PEOPLE and replies are generally towards a person, less so what they are posting about. it's a much lesser sense of community so if someone speaks out against someone that another person follows, they are more likely to just get down voted for not agreeing with or speaking against a person they like.

shows upvotes, downvotes and allows you to sort by upvotes and downvotes.

twitter should do that

also allow you to limit who can comment on and retweet your tweets.

also allow people to see comments from private accounts like it is on instagram

Let's be honest Twitter will likely never be less of a toxic place because that's what alot of people specifically use it for. They like to get into toxic arguments with each other.

Their random locking of account and then pushing the "Verify account to unlock" and e-begging for your phone number even though it can be done with e-mail too, but they purposely hide that. It was just so thirsty and lame I just deleted account when they did it for the 3rd frigging time.

 

Twitter is only good as notification tool for "influencers" and companies. So you're kept in the loop for news and notifications about updates or new releases. Beyond that, it's useless cancerous platform.

Anyone comparing this to reddit hasn't read a single word past the headline. Its purely an analytics tool. Much like how when you like a tweet, it will show you more tweets like it, this is to do the opposite. They are simply adding a features to determine what replies people dislike, in addition to what people like.

every major website requires a phone number though. Its to reduce spam as a throwaway email is easier to obtain than a throwaway phone number. You complain about twitter being toxic while also complain about measures to reduce toxicity.
