But Linus proved in a highly scientific test with a representative sample size that rendering your games at double the framerate that your monitor can display is still massively beneficial to your skill in games, because even though your ping in something like CS:GO is between 40-60 ms at best for an online match, rendering the same stuff ten times at a framerate of 250-300fps makes a world of difference, especially considering that CS:GO servers have a tickrate of 128, so you should totally run every game as fast as possible.</sarcasm>

There's a fresh update from Jay:

Are there any hard numbers on those reports? How many people are exactly affected for any of those cards? And how much is even verified about those reports? I'm a bit skeptical whenever people self-report about stuff like this, there are too many factors at play for many people to draw definite conclusions as to what the cause of a hardware failure may be. And given the number of threads on this very forum where complete newbies try to diagnose a problem and come to the completely wrong conclusion, my confidence in stuff like this isn't too high. I could shoot off an email to Jay and tell him that my card died. How would he verify that? Besides, I find lumping together cards that completely died in with others that are just experiencing shutdowns a bit disingenuous. This software is in beta, it's to be expected that something might cause a crash. That's the intended effect so it doesn't actually break something, after all.ย

The thing is, many people have turned vsync off because of mis-applied advice from other MMO games, and those settings remain even when they aren't playing it.ย

ย

Honestly, the setting that has the most impact on networked games is turning nagle off because many games don't tell the OS to do so, but it's only one-sided, but it means the difference between being able to send 5 commands per second to the server, and 100.

ย

With Vsync, it often has to do with the input timing loop. Crappy games tend to do spin-wait's rather than event-driven logic, and unfortunately, many game engines invoke an entirely separate engine on top for their 2D menus.

That's not a solution.

It could be that due to the GPUย shortage, higher number of defective cards left factories,or even worse - a design flaw/cheap components.

This shortage is a perfect opportunity to put very cheap and unsuitable components on cards, capitalizing on the high demand,

So if your card can get fried by a gameย - consider waiting for a fix/fixed replacement from NVIDIA/manufacturer.

according to jay those other scenarios don't actually draw over the power limit, new world launcher/menu does, and it seems like the ftw3 has very uneven power delivery between the pci-e slot and the 3rd 8-pin power connector too, it's suspected that the pop is from the choke/vrm associated with the 3rd plug, of course this doesn't mean other brands/models are immune.

Can't wait til Jay and Steve put out a video on these.

Going to be an interesting video for sure. That said we come back to the question. Why is this the only game able to cause this overdraw if thats what it is thats doing this.

To me this sounds like the same common issue with the 3090's and 3080's vram overheating issue. My Aorus card vram goes up to 106c when playing New world and I am waiting for new thermal pads for adding some to the back of the card as I have seen that greatly help with this issue.ย

Again why is this only showing up now. Most of these cards have been out for a long time. If some specific "normal"ย occurrence was going to fry them, it would have done so allready. It's not like letting the GPU run wild for mega framerates is unique to this game in the slightest. If that was enough to blow the cards in question to kingdom come they'd have gone a long time ago.

It could be that they are calling something in the API that still renders quickly but normally isn't called on menu screens (which tips the scales).ย  Ultimately though, I don't think this is an issue with New World, but an issue with hardware implementation.

This one disturbs me a lot. ย If GPUs are over heatableย despite throttle systems then CPUs could be too. ย The argument for old school style stress tests and low temperatures is bolstered. ย Iโ€™m pretty sure my equipment is immune to this because by modern standards it is overcooled. ย The stuff canโ€™t run so fast it melts itself. ย

No, it's pretty clearly the lack of frame-rate limiting. You know how people test synthetic benchmarks and never seem to catastrophically cause theย video cards to fail, even if OC'd? The question is why the cards own thermal/power throttling isn't kicking in before this failure happens.

ย

Just like why people shouldn't pick up pre-owned GPU's. You don't know how it's been abused, and this is one of those reasons which puts a cloud over the ability to resell them, since someone might sell a "defective" card that self-destructs and not even have the warranty.
