Apparently that's one of only two tank rampages in modern history ... the other being a T-34-85 driven by a Hungarian pensioner.

Feel the need to step in here. I've followed the thread over at WT forums for a while, my inner engineering nerd enjoys reading about this stuff.

yeap, one thing is the headline, and another thing is what really happened…

Note i have *no idea whatsoever* about this stuff, but i find it highly unlikely that what the headline (entire news) suggests is what actually happened especially considering  the backstory you provided.

This is more likely a screw up somewhere and i doubt a "tank commander" is really as dumb as this news suggests. 🤷‍♂️

When I was in the British army I had a Challenger Mechanic give me one of these manuals out of the blue when we were casually talking on barracks. He seen I really liked the Tank and had an interest in it. Of course I handed it in right away but curious is it this same person again.

Autocorrect can do subtle but very bad things.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

The individual in question is a tank commander by all accounts, (again little details posted over the years make a lie here really unlikely), so no wouldn't be the same individual.

Also note I've still not seen anything about this in national news. by now the serious journalists have had the chance to get their hands on the story and look into it and they apparently don't see anything worth reporting. If this was real they'd be all over it like, well, stink on a skunk.

Can they even get more info out of it than was already here? I doubt the military would comment on this and the matter was probably already resolved internally by now.

I've been keeping my eye on the BBC personally. Seen nothing there. I don't read the papers so anything there would go over my head. Doesn't look like they've got any further info.

Also i'd not class any of those other than the Time and Guardian as "national news" most regular joe blogs will never have heard of the rest in my experiance, (i'e never heard of a couple and the others i've rarely seen/heard of).

Yes and no. They're not going to comment on some aspects, but if they where doing an internal investigation they'd likely say somthing to assure everyone it's being investigated thoroughly, thats what they've done in the past in any case. Presume it's a way of saying "we've got this and won't let it happen again".

Valid point.  Who in British Armed Forces after all would care about the British Forces Broadcasting Service reporting that you accidently treasoned? :V  Wait... Could the 'forces' in both of those be the same forces?

The point is if it was major serious news it would (given COVID19 situation), be second or 3rd page news blared to every tom dick and harry in the UK. Hence why i used "national news" as a term. Not specialist journals that only a small specialised subset of the UK cares about.

The Guardian and Times are an exception, but since i don't read newspapers directly i'm not sure how much focus it's got. But they at least are a reasonable rebuttal of the point i was trying to make. Namely: the news doesn't tend to sleep on security breeches in the military. They tend to get really vocal about it, either because of the breach itself, or because of the contents of what was leaked.

Summary

Here's a funny one. An alleged British tank commander and war thunder player leaked classified documents (basically the user manual) on the Challenger 2 MBT so that Gaijin would fix the model on the challenger 2, specifically the gap between the main turret and hull. This is a violation of the Official Secrets Act, and can carry up to a 14 year punishment in prison if persecuted. Much of the document was heavily redacted though, it was still classified information being shared. Unfortunately, since the information is classified, Gaijin now cannot make the changes.

My thoughts

The information being leaked doesn't seem to be that big of a deal in my opinion, I mean sure its classified, but I highly doubt that foreign powers are going to care about the gap between the turret and hull. For this reason I also doubt the leaker is going to get put in jail or anything. Not an expert in how these things are handled though. Still quite a funny story

Okay lads so India just got Rafale Jets and these are not in DCS (not by Eagle Dynamics at least and also a lot of stuff about them irl is classified), who wants some photos of the cockpit and classified docs ?

Damn ! Guys like these are true gamers who are willing to serve 14years of imprisonment and revealing secrets that could pose threat to a nation's army
