Can I have two different ISPs in the same house?

I visit my mom sometimes and she has a cheap AT&T plan at her house.  I want to be able to play online video games when I’m there but it’s just not feasible with her shitty WiFi connection.

 

Could I add Spectrum service at her house without interfering with her AT&T service?  The location where I’d want the modem/router is only about five feet from outside, so would it be easy for Spectrum to install a new line?

Can it phycially be done? Sure. Double ISPs is common in high-end networks to utilize roll-over in the event of an outage.

I assume you have clearance to do this from your mom? Because as the home owner, she's going to need to approve the install. It also might just be easier to upgrade her current service, as having 2 ISPs in a residential setting is slightly odd.

As long as they use separate delivery methods, sure.  ADSL and Cable for example.  Fiber and Cable, etc.

 

As far as I know you can't do 2 cable ones but I really don't know.

I have had 2 cable docsis connections to my house before. They just use splitters and it works fine. Most home internet(PON/cable) are just running passive splitters so its easy to have more connections.

You can't have 2 ISP's on one cable, and most ISP's use the 1 cable on the pole.

Except for when the cable goes out.. you lose both, eliminating the benefit.

I know it’s a little odd, but so is my mom.  She doesn’t listen to reason (outright switching to Spectrum).  Upgrading her current service is unfortunately not an option, because it’s already the fastest AT&T offers in the area.  I’m not a fan of Spectrum, but they do offer gigabit internet in the area.  I have it at my place and I’m pleased with it.

Any idea what delivery methods AT&T and Spectrum use?  I believe Spectrum uses cable, but I don’t know about AT&T.

How hard would it be to just wire up?  You said wifi is shitty, but that's usually a result of a router or antenna situation.  

 

You aren't mentioning if the entire internet is shitty.

 

Edit:  AT&T should use DLS over phone lines I believe, or dedicated lines for their Fiber gigabit service.

Really hard.

 

EDIT: It’s 100 mbps and I think it’s acceptable when wired, but that really isn’t an option.  I can’t move the locations of any devices, but I could add an additional service with a new modem/router next to my consoles/PC.
