Well 2k is basically 1080p, so your gonna be fine here.

 

I have a 1080, and a 1440p 144hz monitor and it plays basically everything I want at high.

Do you mean max settings? 
it depends.

some games, like doom eternal, sure, they optimized to hell

games like cp2077? No

144 fps? no.

Depends on the game and if you use DLSS 2.0

Some titles are just hard to run above 100 fps.

Also depends on how good your monitor is for lower FPS gaming from the 144 mark.

2k normally mean 2048x1080, or very close to 1080p, 1440p is a separate standard with more pixels. 

 

But that setup will do 1440p 144hz just fine.

1440p at 144hz will depend on the game, most will be great and some will not do 144hz.

 

1440p 144hz+ or 4k in new AAA games with maxed settings requires a new top end GPU every generation. Its just the reality of wanting a premium experience.

 

A 9900k + 2080ti is still a beast of a PC though.

You should be able to play basically all agesm at 1440 144h at medium - high, and most games at ultra. But the difference in quality between high and ultra is pretty small normally.

As demonstrated in this thread, "2k" means different things to different people and using the term usually just diverts the thread into a silly argument about it so it's much better to just say the resolution you mean.

 

If you mean getting 144fps at 1440p in every (or even most) AAA games, then the answer to your question is no.

Without compromise, at all? No, because maximum allowed settings will include so many things like maxed out anti aliasing and all sorts of settings that improve the graphics a tiny bit for large sacrifices in performance.

 

But if you step down from "max" to "high" in pretty much any game, you would not really notice and the performance would be a lot better. that's what I do with my rig for 1440p gaming.

Here is SOTTR on the highest setting with an i9 9900k and a 2080 ti. The computer now has a 3080 and only does 11 more frames in this game.

No. there will always be a compromise somewhere in some games.

don't get so hung up on it if you already have the hardware, just play your games and see what you're PC is capable of. If you don't own the hardware yet, then it doens't matter until you have it.

 

Even with a 11900k or 5950x with a 3090 you wouldn't be able to play ALL games at 1440p@144hz without tweaking some things.

AAA titles generally aim for 60FPS minimum.

 

Generally you will always have to compromise somewhere on settings as very few games are optimised enough to max everything out and function well.

 

What you should do is find the settings that give you the best experience for your hardware.

He'll be more than fine with 98% of the games out there, don't you think?

 

Only the most performance intensive games might force him to drop a setting here or there.
