Thinking of buying the Odyssey G7.

Tigerleon

Hello people! After all research in monitors I came to the conclusion of the G7. I want a good all-rounder that is future proofed with the 240hz and the 1440p resolution. Is it a good upgrade coming from a TN 1080p 144hz acer predator monitor? Thanks!

Edit: It is also about $100 discounted as well which makes me even more eager to buy it. Are ultrawide worth considering as well? Not going over the budget of about $500

ultra wide is expensive and has some downsides, sometimes its just better and cheaper with just more of the same monitor.

Depends on the workload, also some ultra wides have their own issues ontop of the display issues, although not all display types have this issue or if the build quality is good?

TN's have some good things about it, but IPS/VA/OLED to mini-LED have some nicer features or specs along with their flaws too.

G7 is good? but expensive, not sure about it's worth.  BenQ with mobiuz lineup is quite good. I personally use LG 27 850(-B) not the 34 inch wide version.

Hardware Unboxed on that display

I can get it for $585 which is much less expensive than the launch or ordinary price of 700 or what he said in the video. I think I'm gonna grab it very soon. I think ultrawide isn't worth it to me since I don't play simulator games which I see they shine at, I could but I'd rather do it in VR. And on the other hand I would assume ultrawide is more suited for working and not really for gaming since many games have issues with ultrawide etc, and so would my GPU. Thanks for linking that video tho. Haven't seen it before.

I personally don't like IPS monitors for several reasons, IPS glow, bad contrast and not very immersive nor needed for any work that requires super accurate colors.

Tbh the curve is a problem with this monitor, not a feature.

I tried the monitor and other than the severe G-Sync issues it had at launch, the curve was just too extreme and completely unnecessary with a 16:9 monitor. With this curve everything is distorted and lines that should be straight are not anymore. In this price range i'd rather get the LG 27GP850-B. Yes it's IPS with the typical IPS downsides, but overall a much better allrounder monitor. The 60Hz deficit will not be noticeable to the majority of users.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Agreed. I have a 1500R curved ultrawide, and even then, there is some distortion towards the edges, but it's mostly fine. However, the G7 is not ultrawide and has a much more severe curve. Just based off my experience with my current monitor, there's no way I could do actual work on something like the G7. Curved panels are great for content immersion with gaming or watching media, but they're very much one trick ponies in that respect: productivity work is going to suffer. If you do anything other than content consumption, I'd avoid curved displays entirely unless maybe something like mine (ultrawide with only a slight curve, since it won't be as noticeable).

I sit very close to the monitor anyways so the curve shouldn't be much of a problem for me. And since I don't do work on my computer and only gaming I'd like to have that 240hz just as a nice feature when I upgrade my GPU. VA is probably gonna be my favorite panel type since IPS is too blue or grey in dark scenes and the same with TN.

In the end it's your choice. I also prefer VA panels (I use a PG35VQ now). First i also thought the curve would be something i could get used to, but after trying it out the monitor was a flop for me.

i highly recommend seeing the monitor in person first, the curve is more extreme than i thought even after seeing a 34GL850 (it's almost the perfect monitor), to the point where it gave me a giant headache after a matter of minutes (i looked at my friends g9 and couldnt stand it, he also returned it for a different reason. The only other time i got a headache from a monitor was from trying to read text on 4:2:2 just to see how bad it was, and even that doesn't compared to how bad the g9 felt.

I just got my G7 (T1 Faker Edition) yesterday, and the monitor is beautiful and works fantastic. The only "issue" I've had is a weird high pitch buzz sound that comes out from the bottom right of the LED panel itself, near where the lights are. I'm very curious if you have the same issue. I am going to create another thread to see if others are experiencing the same thing.

In a quiet room, it's faint. But if you put your ear up to the bottom right of the monitor, it sounds like a high pitched buzzing sound, similar to a coil whine. I'm not sure if this is normal for 240hz monitors. The only "solution" I have found, is to lower the HZ from 240 to anything else (144,120,60). If I change to 144hz, the buzz goes away.

I just grabbed it 2 weeks ago. So yes, after the PG32UQX released. I have seen reviews on the UQX and it seems to have bad haloing even though it has over 1000 dimming zones. That's likely because of the use of an IPS panel with lower native contrast.

But i got the PG32VQ for 1700€ instead of the 2500€ MSRP. And spending over 3000€ for a technically worse experience with the UQX seemed like a bad deal to me 😄

I'm very happy with the PG32VQ. It's HDR is even better than my C9 OLED and the response times are good enough for someone like me who doesn't play any competitive games. And 200Hz is a nice bonus. There is some dark smearing like with many VA's but it's not a problem for me. The FALD works amazingly bringing out very bright 1100 nit highligts and 0 nit blacks in the same picture. If you can find a deal on it, i can fully recommend the PG35VQ. The only issue i have is the noticeable fan it has. But that's sadly something every monitor with G-Sync module and bright HDR has.

Many high-end monitors these days have fans in them. While they might not be noticeable for most people, if you have a very quiet setup you might hear it.

Pretty much any monitor with a native G-Sync module has a fan.

And bright HDR monitors with HDR1000 and up likely have a fan to keep internal temps in check.

Just got the monitor today. I've tried multiple games and I gotta say. WOW. Coming from a TN 144hz to VA 240hz is amazing. Best contrast for being LCD paired with pretty good colors is amazing for anything. The curve is really good for me as well. I sit maybe 40cm away from the screen and it doesn't bother me at all.

Speaking of g-sync. Anything worth turning on? I have mainly felt input lag with it on with other monitors. Also what brightness should I have? The default was like 10 and I could barely see anything. I turned it up to 85 but not sure if that is too much or if I should have it at 100.

Glad to hear you're happy with your purchase! For me the curve was a mute point, but good if it works for you.

Brightness is entirely subjective. Turn it to whatever feels best for you. But the lower, the more your eyes will thank you.

You should definetly use G-Sync whereever possible. If it works correctly it will not add any input lag and there are no downsides to using it.

Turn on the toggle in the control panel for fullscreen and windowed apps.

Then go to the 3D settings inside Nvidia control panel and set the following:

Vertical sync = on

Preferred monitor technology = G-Sync compatible

Ultra low latency mode = Ultra

Max fps = 1 below your max Hz. So in your example 239

Then always disable V-Sync ingame (keep it on in the nvidia panel).

Now G-Sync should work fully as intended.

Have fun with the monitor.

Now you can help me again the next time i need help with audio equipment 😄

TN's have some good things about it, but IPS/VA/OLED to mini-LED have some nicer features or specs along with their flaws too.

G7 is good? but expensive, not sure about it's worth.  BenQ with mobiuz lineup is quite good. I personally use LG 27 850(-B) not the 34 inch wide version.

Hardware Unboxed on that display

Downsides for ultrawides is mostly playing OLD games.

If you spend most of your time playing current titles and AAA games, it's for you.

Quite a few ultrawides suck, rule of thumb, don't go cheap, especially not a cheap VA, they are the trash F tier of ultrawides.

my LG ultrawide is great, very little BLB, very little ips glow almost none in fact, only real issue is the displayport "d.cing" the monitor on sleep and acting like a new display on wake up.

Low end VA panels can have insanely bad ghosting where you can watch dark objects smear across the screen like black ink smearing across a page of paper.

I have been told that the high end samsung VA panels don't really have any smearing, but alas id give it a shot and return it if you hate it.

And yes, Ultrawides make games more fun, in my opinion the entire world should switch to 21:9 resolution for all screens, the human eye isn't a small square like a 16:9 screen.

My GPU isn't something that'd like ultrawide sadly, especially my eyes for competetive games. And they are extremely expensive as you said and I'd rather have more fps with a good resolution which is 1440p with great contrast since I don't really care about top notch color accuraccy.

Vertical sync = on

Thanks for the answer! So, my biggest question is, do you need to enable v-sync specifically for every game in order to g-sync to work?
