GoodBytes

Note:

This thread initially covered a live event. Pictures shown where taking during the live event by The Verge and linked bellow. This was done as a secondary source as not everyone could watch the event live.

News:
Microsoft next version of Windows has been revealed. Called Windows 11, it features a lot of big changes that affected everyone.

736692141_Screenshot2021-06-24125721.thumb.png.336ebed39982c7de73efb4f56d8d259a.png

The event was held at 11am EST. If you missed it, you can watch it here again:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/event

Here are some things revealed with some extras not covered from the event:

  • Bluetooth improvements. Windows now support AAC codec for superior Bluetooth audio quality. In addition, it now combines Headset and Music modes as it does on other non-Windows devices.
  • New Start. No more Live Tiles. Those are discontinued. The Start menu integrated Search as before, and improved with OneDrive integration. Meaning, if you are signed up in OneDrive, you can directly search your files from it on your start menu. So if you don't know if a document was in OneDrive or Documents (say), well the Search feature covers both.
  • New Store app. New layout, new reworking.
  • Android apps arrives to Windows 11. You can now install and run your Android apps. These apps can be easily acquired from the new Store app.
  • The new Store now allowed developers to use their own ecommerce platform, instead of Microsoft (meaning Microsoft doesn't get a cut if the dev choose to not use Microsoft solution)
  • Store now supports other stores inside. Showcased was Amazon own app Store.
  • Various touch improvements, including now ease of scaling and moving a window using touch. No more hunting for that pixel border with touch and fighting with your device.
  • New Snapping mode of Windows. You can now snap a window, not only side by side, or in quarters (2x2), but also have 3 way snap. Meaning 3 apps side-by-side. This is great for ultra wide monitors, and super ultra wide monitors. This is accessible via the maximize button
  • Skype has been removed from Windows. It is being replaced by one that most people use: Microsoft Teams. It also has integration with it, allowing one to quickly start and jump in a meeting from a single click.
  • Widgets makes a return after being introduced back in Windows Vista.
  • Multi-monitor support improvements. Program size and locations are now remembered when you disconnect a secondary monitor and plug it back in.
  • Interface adapts between touch and desktop mode if you have a convertible device.
  • The new interface animation engine was reworked to be faster, more responsive, and more fluid.
  • New Touch keyboard. Reworked touch keyboard, it is now faster and more responsive. Includes GIF support, voice typing, and theming.
  • Auto HDR mode for gaming
  • XBox Game Pass now included in Windows 11, and won't be "another app". It will be integrated in the XBox app, adding value to it.
  • WSLg. Allowing you run GUI based Linux applications under Windows. This support Audio, and GPU passthrough (CUDA) (requires special GPU drivers from AMD/Nvidia to be installed)

The Verge has a recap video of the event:

How much it will cost:

Windows Central reports that Microsoft will make Windows 11 a free update to Windows 10 users. It will delivered via Windows Update, and will no time limit on the offer. People will be able to upgrade to it at anytime.

When?

Windows 11 will officially ship later this year, around October or November, like previous version of Windows 10.

Quote

Windows 11 will ship later this year, and will be offered as a free upgrade for Windows 10 users. Microsoft says there's no time limit on this, meaning you won't have to upgrade to Windows 11 right away if you don't want to.

How to get the beta?

Microsoft on Twitter, announced that the company will be ready to release the first beta version to Windows Insiders starting next week.

So we will have to wait a few more days.

I have made a new thread under Windows forums section called "Windows 11 Insider Program Thread". (Will be working on it, as soon as I have lunch, meaning after this submitting this).

It will cover:

  • Instructions to join the Insider Program and be ready to get Windows 11 beta the moment it gets released.
  • Recommendations on using a beta version of Windows

Like the Windows 10 version of the thread (which has now been unpinned), it will cover news of new builds, share discussion on new features and help on issues. Hope to see you soon there! 😄

System Specs:

Thanks to @NotTheFirstDaniel for finding this:

On Microsoft official website, a special Windows 11 page came online after the event: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11

It covers the updated minimum specs for running Windows 11:

Processor 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger storage device
System firmware          UEFI, Secure Boot capable
TPM Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0

Graphics card DirectX 12 compatible graphics / WDDM 2.x
Display >9” with HD Resolution (720p)
Internet connection:     Microsoft account and internet connectivity required for setup for Windows 11 Home

In other words:

  • Legacy system with old BIOSs are no longer supported
  • It looks like if you have Windows 11 Home, like Windows 10, you are forced to use a Microsoft linked account. No local account.
  • No more 32-bit support. Windows 11 will be available in 64-bit only (x86-64 and ARM64 CPUs only)
  • Your system needs to have TPM 2.0 chip. Not an issue for most laptops, and many recent desktop by OEMs. HUGE problem for DIY computers where most motherboard didn't include a TPM chip.

Ooh. Interesting. Thanks for sharing the link. Let's see what kind of UI changes they make.

The little I've seen of the new UI I actually liked, even though I heard a lot of people disliking it.

Edit: LOL they're starting with useless marketing fluff, I think I'll wait for the recaps

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

  • Multiple-Monitor improvements. When you disconnect a secondary monitor and plug it back, windows of program return back to the way they were.
  • Snap Groups. You can make groups of snap layout (app side by side) that you can return too.
  • Edge has a vertical tab view that one can easily switch to:

  • Skype is gone from Windows.... Now room for Microsoft Teams (considering how widely it is used, this is a very welcome changed). Also, the Teams icon on the taskbar pops up the chat list

Cool, but id still consider it the way i consider windows 10 (i hate w10) if it still has all the bloat w10 has, if microsoft either abolishes bloatware or keeps the bloatware but windows licenses dont exist anymore (aka never needing to pay for w11) then i guess ill consider changing my opinion on it but ill prob be better off with debloated w10 or qubes linux anyways.

Great:

Faster updates: 40% smaller and can run in the background.

Better voice typing: I hope that the nuance acquistion has some effect.

Profiles: Finally! I've missed it.

Better store: The current store is sh*t. This one looks better.

Android apps

It's fine?:

Auto HDR looks really really awesome!

Better perf: Better boot

better snap: Eh, it was in leak, so what?

emojis: Much needed.

Multi monitor integration: I don't use multimonitor with my lappy, so whatever. But looks cool.

Widgets and news integration: Fine, but ms needs to make MSN better.

Bad:

Teams integration: More background processes for stuff that nobody uses. Should not have been in such spotlight.

Touch integration reminds me of win8

Lack of details.

Tip: Watch MS streams on twitter instead of ms site.

Windows Snapping vertically when your screen (or tablet) is in portrait mode:

lcimg-962ba7a8-380b-498f-927c-3fe086f890

  • Reworked Touch keyboard! Faster, more responsive, theming, improved layouts, and GIF support (like on phones, is what I mean)

  • Was hinted: That the Microsoft Store "Entertainment" tab now integrates multiple streaming services. Waiting for more information...
  • Gaming:
    • Auto HDR mode:
      lcimg-8561b925-5349-44c6-9eef-ec5ec27614

    • "Over a thousand games will be automatically enhanced."
    • Direct storage API is coming to Windows!
    • Xbox Game Pass built into Windows 11 via the Xbox app. (I think it is a great feature for those on non gaming capable laptops or like me, stuck on an aged old desktop (12 years old) that cant' play games. Also, great that it's not a separate app, but rather included in an existing one. Reduces clutter)

New Store app:
lcimg-a53a3c8f-8ee6-46e1-9cc5-7af5870fb5
(MUUUUUUCH nicer.... hopefully it works well now.)

Will have all kinds of apps: PWA, Win32, or UWP.

Developers can use their own Commerce Engine instead of Microsoft one (Microsoft will get no cut)! This is HUGE. This will really help the store pick up, I expect!

Nice to see them bringing back some "features" they took away a while ago (Widgets and Rounded corners).

As for the rest, can't say I care much. Will probably use them, like android apps in Windows. But I likely won't notice or care for the majority of them.

Here's hoping MS teams won't randomly disconnect me all the time(if not once a day, at least once a week) on Win11 for no apparent reason, like it does right now on Android and Windows 10. (Same as Skype and Outlook...)
