Summary

John McAfee, creator of the antivirus, has been found dead in his Spanish prison cell. This is days after Spanish courts ruled in favour of extraditing McAfee to the US on tax evasion charges with crypto.

Hours earlier, a Spanish court issued a preliminary ruling in favor of the 75-year-old tycoon’s extradition to the United States to face tax-related criminal charges.

Security personnel at the Brians 2 penitentiary near the northeastern Spanish city tried to revive him, but the jail’s medical team finally certified his death, a statement from the regional Catalan government said.

 

My thoughts

This is honestly surprising for me, for no other reason than I didn't know he was in trouble with the law. It does make sense though, like cmon, only a criminal would make something like McAfee.

Its surprising that this happened considering he could have appealed the case. It is worth nothing that on October 5th, 2020 the United States Department of Justice filed charges against McAfee on tax evasion and willful failure to file tax returns over the course of 2014 to 2018.

 

The DOJ Press Release noted that the maximum sentence of five years in prison on each count of tax evasion and a maximum sentence of one year in prison on each count of willful failure to file a tax return. McAfee also faces a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.

 

He would have been looking at a maximum of 30 years.

On the note of appeal, any extradition would also need to be approved by the Spanish Cabinet

I'm gonna be honest, as many times as I've uninstalled his antivirus, he was kinda legendary.

My math is wrong. I am looking at the indictment now and there are 10 charges there. I made the mistake of forgetting a year there. My bad,

Well, to be fair this guy did create McAfee AV, so it's tangentially related at least.

I think there is more to the story. It sounds like he had brushes with the law many times. He was even a person of interest in a murder according to the PCgamer article Im reading. While they claim suicide, who knows what this guy was involved in. He could have been silenced.
