My 1080 Ti completely stopped working mid game. Please help me!

ShiniX

Hello everyone,

My GPU (1080 TI) stopped working mid game for no reason. The screens went black and the GPU fans stopped spinning.

Did a lot of troubleshooting as mentioned below and the result is always no signal output, fans don't spin and rgp don't turn on.

I tried the following:

Plug and unplug the GPU and the 8+8 power connector

Plug it in the secondary PCI-E

Tried to put the GPU in a completely different old system, no luck.

Tried to a different GPU in my system and it worked (an old ATI HD 5550)

The built-in Intel GPU is working

The GPU is Gigabyte Aorus 1080 TI.

I would really appreciate any help, Is there anything I can do or try to fix it?

Especially with the current state of the market getting a replacement of any sort is out of the question 馃槥

oof, i feel for you. When using the intel graphics with the 1080 plugged in, is it detected at all?

Not at all. Checked the BIOS and device manager, it doesn't list any other GPU than intel

Looks like you tried just about everything, looks dead.聽 Call Gigabyte and ask them if there is anything else to test, or RMA potential (even if it is out of warranty, can't hurt to ask).

Unfortunately it sounds like the GPU聽is dead, testing the GPU in another computer entirely gives you the answer you're looking for.聽聽If the card doesn't even work in聽another computer you are out of luck, if it did work in another computer it would lead me to another issue with your computer however if the GPU does the exact same thing in a different system that means the GPU is definitely the problem. Maybe check to see if you still have a warranty on the card, my 1080ti FTW3 had a warranty that was good until March of 2021 so there is definitely still some out there that should have warranty time left.聽

A failure like this (shut off and fans stop) means something blew on the power delivery of the card.聽 It's very rare for fans to actually not spin since fans are supposed to spin as soon as the card receives power (whether or not it's "half functional" or not).

You are not going to be able to fix this problem.

All you can do at this point is to disassemble the card completely, buy some 99% isopropyl alcohol (like a quart of it will work), clean off all the thermal pad and grease first, then douse the entire card submerged into a small tub, and let it sit there about 10-15聽minutes.聽 Then fully clean and dry the card.

Then reapply thermal pads (cheap Arctic 6 w/mk pads will work), of the correct thickness, reapply thermal paste, and then see if the card boots.聽聽
If it does not, you're best off sending it to someone with experience in fixing these failures.

Razorwind on [H]ardforum may be able to help, but I do NOT know if he allows people to send him cards for fixing.

It's "possible" Elmor or Buildzoid may allow you to send the card to them, provided you have some sort of contact with them or you're on their discord.
