Doing any RAM critical work? Then maybe not. Going from quad channel to dual channel might hurt performance in some situations.

If you want to, I guess you could, but that would of course require a new motherboard plus a new CPU, perhaps a new cooler. The 10980XE could probably go a few more years before it needs to be replaced.

HOLY F*****. I could say that for the rest of the day. if this is your first pc then don't spend all that cash on this monsta. also AMD has better performance than intel so you might want to go with AMD. also a 3090 would be a bit overkill since it is too powerful. you would wanna consider an rtx 3080 or 3080 ti instead. you would wanna go with a 5900x instead of that thing which tries to take down AMD's threadripper series. and since this is ur first ever build, DON'T CUSTOM LOOP. i'm not saying it is bad but since this is ur first time u might mess up and coolant is VERY dangerous to pc hardware. so you might want to go with an AIO.

Just about all coolants including distilled water is non conductive.

 

AIO high failure rates over any other type of cooler on the market isn't always the best decision for 1000$ processors capable of over 300w thermal dissipation. 

 

The 10980XE is 36 threads. So a 5950x isn't an upgrade on the multitasking front.

yea i know it wouldn't be an upgrade but it depends on what he is going to do on the pc. if it is just gaming then that monsta is purely overkill.

Sorry guys, I switched.

 

Mainly because someone came to buy my mobo, CPU and block for £1150.

 

Which granted me enough money to directly replace my mobo with Crosshair VIII Dark Hero and 5950x for free essentially.

 

The only thing I paid for is AMD Foundation block from Optimus water-cooling.

I don't think that is really worth the price, Upgrading it to Ryzen 9 5950x wont really getting much of return... Like your current CPU Should be enough for basically anything. Maybe if you want to try PCIE Gen 4. Other than that it's not really worth the price...

 

Just wait till DDR5 will be a thing, Imo this is currently a bad timing to build a PC. Because Both intel and AMD are gonna expected to upgrade their system with DDR5 and those goodness. (Intel 11gen and AMD AM4 is probably the last platform with DDR4)

It's always a "bad" time to upgrade.

 

600W Intel CPU with 220 single core and 5000 multi when overclocked very heavily Vs 280W AMD chip with 280 single core and 5700 multi.

 

Not a difficult decision when upgrade is free.
