YouTube now requires EU, EEA, UK & Swiss viewers to physically verify age before they can watch age restricted videos

And once again the EU shows its exemplary skills at not understanding the internet and ruining it for everyone.

Like honestly, I get really tired of the EU trying to force down all these laws on the internet.

Luckily VPNs are a thing, because otherwise this stuff, combined with the ridiculous article 13 would become good reasons to move the hell out of here

For the people asking for an age restricted video, there is one in the important video playlist:

I'm surprised people only started noticing it now because it has been a thing for months.

And it's not like youtube had no censorship before. Stuff like "X is not available in your country" has been a thing for basically ever and only with a VPN you notice how much stuff gets censored just with that alone.

And with all the elsagate crap that SOMEHOW still isn't solved (it's better but it's still an issue) you just know that youtube is really not a great platform. But then again there aren't many alternatives are there?

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Not for me. I tried that with a non-restricted video and it played. I entered a link to a restricted video, nothing. It doesn't play.

they patched it... ugh.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned but IMO it’s quite obvious that this allows Google to know specifically who is a marketable audience (people with money) and who is actually a real person. Lots of YT accounts are bots. Forcing the link of ID allows for a very targeted advertising strategy.

The whole censorship conspiracy thing comes off as a bit tinfoil hat. I guess maybe YT may also use it to block videos they don’t like, but I think a profit motive is the clearest incentive here.

I was getting this for watching a video posted in discord but it was taking me directly to the YouTube website.

I am 27 in September. Very stupid personally in my opinion, it took me to a page which had my card attached to it that I use for Google Pay and charged me nothing and then took me back to the video. Doesn't seem like a very rock solid way to do it and its more of an annoyance because its not just a one off thing, it happened again 3 videos later.

I mean they haven't been found guilty yet so the most you could say is that some people think that these are not true as of right now.

Who are?  The ratings organizations? I'm not aware of them being sued, at least not consistently. The point is about them not Google/Youtube, those are the things the ratings organizations actually have. Google/Youtube don't even have any of those, not even superficial taking the piss ones.

youtube don't have a ratings team, they have a legal team.  After that we can argue all day if they are directed by a socialist political leaning company or a capitalist money making venture.

yea, the EU is awful, countries need to split off and be independent so they don't have to follow what the EU wants them to do like the UK has done!

You see the problem? YouTube can now stick a flag on a video and effectively kill it dead while the platform users have no idea what's happening.

Thats nothing new, Youtube has been doing that for a while, anything their legal system deems adult rated either gets the age restriction, or the algorithm hides it so users have less of a chance of seeing a video which can really hurt content creators.

In Romania You don't really have to verify your age . Google told me to verify my account or it will be deleted.  Thats weird because i don't watch age restricted videos .

I have an issue with this. The level of info that is apparently being asked for. You might have to present a very basic ID card when entering some, (most will just rely on the bartender judging your age and thats sufficient legally speaking), drinking establishments, beyond that the only people who want this level, (i.e. much more than very basic ID), of ID info are government entities, banks, and employers in specific fields. Thats it. No one else asks for this kind of info. I told Paypal to take a long walk off a short pier years ago when they tried to ask for this. Private companies that aren't your employer have no justifiable reason to be demanding, (or to be asked to demand), that level of info. Though it sounds like the actual legal requirements are quite a bit less stringent than whats being implemented.

Well Paypal is essentially a bank and thus was required by governments to collect that info...

AFAIK Paypal has never been considered a bank and subject to the banking regulations. They're a payment processor that handled, (technically still does but they're redundant now IMO), transfer of money between real and digital world back when you couldn't use most bank cards online.

You can store a balance on your Paypal account so it's not just an intermediary. You can receive money on your Paypal account and leave it there/use it to pay for stuff through Paypal without it ever going to your other documented bank accounts, so could be used for tax evasion. That triggered governments a few years back once they realised.

This was a lot more than a few years back, (i stopped paying attention to paypal news after this happened), so this was almost certainly prior to that. I should also note the paypal example was even more invasive than this google one. Even opening a new bank account didn't need as much as what they where asking for. Worst I've ever been asked for aside from them was 2 different bills with my name and current address on them.

The fact that at least at the time they wern't a financial institution was why i had issues giving it, (ontop of how much they where asking for). Banks and the government have some pretty harsh limitations on what they can do with the info you provide. Paypal at the time had none.

I've just spend twenty minutes trying to find an age-restricted video to test this and failed.

I'm not sure whenever this is sad or hilarious.

EDIT: Nevermind, Samsung's Virtual Assisstant to the rescue. Didn't have to do anything... is this for newer accounts only? Or did my payment methods from 6 years ago when I had an Android phone count?

I like cute animal pics.
