This should be illegal… - Manufacturers are swapping SSD components

ivycomb

Bait & switch is a common deception technique that's as old as time itself, but usually it's only seen being done by bad actors. What if I told you that this is happening today, right now, on sites like Amazon and Newegg, with some of the best selling SSDs?

Got an SX8200 Pro and got lucky to receive a stable version, after RMA, when the drive started to develop anomalies... (one year ago)

Spoiler

Just to add, I've bought 100+ items from Aliexpress, including SSDs, but only 2 cheap items are bad (SSDs are not one of those). For one, after RMA I got a refund soon.

It doesn't always accurately report the DRAM, but everything else is accurate. Also prints out a text document with SMART and block data.

Edit: Just to be clear, use this tool at your own risk. I'm not sure who the developer is, this has been cited a lot elsewhere and appears to be safe, but always act with caution when a piece of software isn't digitally signed or traceable to a developer (and even then.)

I got two SX 8200 Pros right before the news broke they had switched them.

Mine didn't hit their full rated speed but I've never had an SSD that did I don't think and they were fast "enough."

Then one of them started to die on me in just six months of use. That one just got sent in for RMA, and when I get it back I am going to try to sell the pair locally. I am back to Samsung for SSD's, every one I have ever used has been absolutely bulletproof.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Yaeh, got a good controller version (SM2262EN):

image.png.ec6b9c5ac92ab9a01281c56e9c739d53.png

Also the SSD tier list makers are somewhat aware of whats going on. But perhaps SX8200 Pro should be in lower tier for now?

The listed spec for SSDs really needs to be changed to state minimums, rather than the BS that is "Up To".

Could be less! Could be a lot less.

I bought my 512 GB SX8200 Pro from CCL Computers in July 2020.

Is the SM2262AB considered fine or rubbish?

Hey Guys. I have two of those (1TB variants) bought like 1,5 years apart. Is there anywhere I can supply more data into the matter?

Well, that sim tools doesn't work for me ( error: can't open drive ). But Aida64 shows something. It seems like I've got Variant "B".

Both of mine are using SM2262EN controller and 96L Micron NAND.

But one is using SAMSUNG DDR3 and the other Nanya.

I got them about 1 year apart from each other, 1TB versions.

I thought this was widely known, more specifically from Kingston?

They have been doing this to SD and microSD cards back when 64GB cards were quite high-end

If you have an old microSD kingston card laying around, do some benchmarks and check if it matches the class that's printed on it.

It will likely not meet the specs.

They still do this today btw. But nobody cares these days I guess.

Source is dutch but benchmarks speak for themselves:

Mine bought a month ago is on SM2262EN. The performance numbers with 3k-3.5k read, and 2.6-2.9k write so it seems to be stable, despite the flash memory being some new memory factory in China I saw on the news recently YMTC.

I've compared my benchmark to an original benchmark of the SX 8200 PRO

Mine:

Original (from this review in 2019)

I think at least for me, my conclusion is getting a recent revision, the SSD claimed stats are still there, but they engaged on a lottery of revisions that don't perform the same, at that, it seems it'll get more common as some keep saying SSD componentes are the new GPUs as far shortages are concerned.

Don’t know of anyone buying Kingston cards tbh. Certainly no professional photographers or videographers I’m aware of are using them. Anecdotal, but could well be a case of no one cares because no one is using them anyway.

Apart from Samsung, which other brands/manufacturers are reliable?

Samsung, Micron, and Western Digital all have near-total or total vertical integration in their SSD lineups. (All 3 brands have at least some products that are designed entirely in-house, since they all produce & design DRAM, NAND, and controllers)

That doesn't necessarily mean that they're more reliable or better than other brands, Sabrent has an excellent track record and they use Phison controllers on their drives. It just means that they have full control over the supply chain and components that go into their SSDs.

i do the writing of things hello | they/them

Pro people don't buy them, very true.

Also not exactly the market Kingston focuses on.

The market is actually the average person that just wants a microSD for their car or phone to get some more storage. People that usually don't look further than what's on the box and probably don't even know what GB means.

That's the kind of person that buys kingston cards.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3
