5950x low clock speeds

Hi there,

 

this is my PC:

  • 5950x completely stock with latest AMD chipset drivers on Windows 10 Pro
  • Noctua NH-U12A cooler
  • ASRock x570M Pro4 with P3.50 UEFI (latest with AGESA 1.2.0.2)
  • 32 GB DDR 3600
  • GTX 1070 (not relevant here)

 

After switching to the 5950x two months ago, I suspected low clocks. Now I finally found the time to run some benchmarks.

It seems that the singlecore boost clock reaches at most 4.7 GHz. With multicore the cores settle in at only 3.7 GHz. Neither are limited by temperature, which never exceeds 75°C.

 

From what I'm reading elsewhere I should be getting 4.9 GHz singlecore boost and 3.9 GHz on multicore. What is limiting my CPU? I tried both with and without AMDs precision boost, it didn't make any noticeable difference. Is it limited by power somehow? Any pointers would be helpful.

Cinebench isn't the best test for this. It's a longer test and doesn't really fully stress the CPU. Try benching it in CPU-Z or something like Prime95 or FurMark. That will do a better job of actually showing the peaks.

That is a massive CPU for such a small cooler.. might have to step it up a little..

Nah. I think you're thinking of the U12S. The U12A has nearly the same performance as a D15.

Wow I feel stupid now. When I run a single thread on P95 the temperature shoots up to 90°C and it begins to throttle. For multithreaded I can get all 16 cores up to at least 4.4 GHz now, which seems very good now I guess?

 

Wow my U12A does not seem to be able to cope with a single fully boosting core? I would have never guessed that

It's a massive cooler, although the fans max out at 2k RPM so that might be an issue

Well, Prime95 puts *way* more stress on the CPU than you'll ever experience in day to day usage. So, high temps there don't necessarily mean anything useful. Zen 3 runs hot, in general, though. You can try undervolting it with the curve optimizer to give yourself more thermal headroom. It usually performs much better that way, anyways.

4400 is not too bad. A Linpack Xtreme load brings my clocks down to 4500 solid. OCCT type load is 4750, 3DMark rides the 4950 limit the whole time. I am running the stock clock range at the moment.

Same. I can get as high as 4.6GHz all core, but I'm rather frustratingly capped at 4.95GHz single core. That's with it undervolted 30 steps. I was able to get almost 5.1GHz single core with more aggressive PPT, TDC, and EDC limits, but it pretty dramatically affected by multicore performance. Multicore matters far more for what I do, so that was a no-go. It also spiked my temps up to around 92C, which means I was pushing the limits of what my poor U12S could handle.

I am using -30 with pbo disabled as well. Works great! For 5150 I use 200 130 130 it seems to work ok.. better than letting the mobo do it.

 

Not gonna lie.. I think my air cooled setup is pretty good, better than average maybe.. but even I am considering an AIO now that they are better than the original h100.. which I had. But at the same time it’s not going to buy me any extra performance, it’s not going to be quieter. Or I could be wrong.. and it will be. Not sure which one to get yet..

Your CPU is capping at TDC 95A and EDC 140A. Your CPU has to lower its voltage/frequency to stay within those limits. Enable PBO and check if your temps are good.  If you want stock 5950x values I'd check your PBO settings, there should be a "cpu controlled" option, auto might be slightly off for some reason.

 

IMO the stock AMD limits are lowballed so they can claim "x" efficiency and they don't have to put "requires top tier cooling" on the box 🤣 That's why PBO enabled exist and it just works and is so easy to do. They can claim 142watts, but with 1 click you get what the 5950x should actually be running at. IMO 😅

 

A negative PBO curve optimizer is what I do with mine. Try -5 all core, test for stability and go up by 5, most people get somewhere between -10 to -20 all core. It'll reduce the voltage at any given frequency allowing it to clock up at the same voltage giving higher frequency without drawing more power.

 

The easiest option is to just enable PBO and check your temps.

 

If your up for tinkering you can adjust the limits manually to get the most speed your cooling can safely handle. I have a per core curve optimizer, takes a bit of time with 16 cores. TDC 150A/EDC 200A, sustains 217watts all core at 4.55GHz/5050MHz boost @ 85c max temp in my ITX case.

 

TDC will make the biggest difference for multicore temps, without limits it'll pull 167A @ 247watts and 92c with my Arctic Freezer ii 280 maxed out, TDC 160 pulls around 225watts, TDC 150 is 217watts, with my curve settings. I'm happy at 85c and quieter, so I leave it at TDC 150. After 85c I believe a soft throttle starts, 25-50mhz, the hard thermal throttle is at 95c though. (I think setting a wattage limit would have the same affect? I'm not 100% sure if TDC vs wattage limit interacts different with the curve?)

 

In your first picture what does the 74/87c reading mean? Check your CCD1/2 values, if one is at 74c and the other 87c you should repaste your cooler. My 5950x has way lower temps single core, 70c singlecore, 85c multi. If your not going over 75c, you've got tones of room to go faster IMO.
