Seagate is not the best. There is no "best" company for making any products. All companies have the capability of making both good and bad product lines. All products can (and will) eventually fail. When it comes to hard drives, assume the drive is failing the moment its first powered on. Why? Because anything mechanical begins to fail as soon as it starts to move - it's just a matter of time before it catastrophically fails. How do you overcome this? Backup your data and have hot-spares on hand so you can swap in a new drive when one fails.

It usually differs with the drive models, some are never dying, running strong several years, while other models die within months or weeks.

 

But it is the same with most drive manufacturers...

 

If you want to know about reliability, go to backblazes website and look at their drive reliability blog

I have drives that have been working without error since the late 90’s, most of the time drive failures come down to fluke error, not always something predictable, commonly caused by user error, but the ones not caused by that, it’s not something that could really be prevented.


There’s a 1.1gb hard drive in my 1997 micron transport XPE which has a SMART reported uptime of around 52k hours, and a power on count of 12k cycles.

By all means this drive should be dead, but it’s fine. Hard drives are weird like that.

I can't keep up with a HDD from the 90s but I have a Hitachi HDD from 2009 that still runs perfectly. Also heavily used. Just won't die. I kinda love it.

I still have a Quantum Lighting 512 MByte going strong in my good old amiga  =) I think from around 1994
