Using a phone which does not release in my country.

Ombii

Hello, I want to buy the SHARP AQUOS R6 when it releases, I've heard around late august. however it only releases in japan and a few other countries, not australia.

if I managed to get my hands on the phone is there any reason why it would not work in my country, data connection?

Some countries requires IMEI registration in order for your phone to work with local service providers. Other than that make sure bands of the phone match to your country, if it does it should technically can work.

Another concern is whether the phone supports the frequencies (LTE bands) that are used in your region. Quick search showed 1, 3, 7 and 28 for Telstra, 1, 3 and 5 for Vodafone. Also found a Wikipedia article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G_connectivity_in_Australia

Basically the phone needs to support the frequencies that your operator uses. Otherwise you won't have cellular connectivity.

EDIT: Very often it is not an issue, but there are some phones, that use cheaper chips, that support only a small number of frequencies. This one has Snapdragon 888, so hopefully it is not an issue.
