Keep RTX 3070TI or trade it?

2DPrinter

Hey yall,

So I was lucky enough to get an RTX 3070TI FTW3 from EVGA (the $800 premium one).
It is pretty overkill for me since I just play Rocket League, Apex Legends, and a few other Steam games. The most graphically demanding game I would play rn is Generation Zero (if you even know what that is).

I think the RTX 3070TI is for like 1440p and 4k gaming.. which I'm not sure I'll want to do. I want to try out RTX minecraft and maybe ray tracing in other games too if I find one I like.

I was thinking about trading the 3070ti on OfferUp (and trying not to get scammed by doing it in person) for an rtx 3060 or 3060ti and some cash. Here's why: budget. Don't wanna have to pay over $1000 for this GPU and a new monitor (because my monitor rn is 1080p 60hz). So instead was thinking get the 3060 and and a 1080p 144hz monitor.

Am I making a bad decision? Even with the 3060, should I aim for a fancier monitor? Again, I am trying to budget. And I have seen the 3070TI doesn't have great price to performance...

Thoughts??

Hang onto it. Considering you'd essentially be downgrading in every way going to any lesser card, I say just use the overkill card as long as you can. 😛

So, my advice would be to keep the card for years to come. Playing these games on 1080p, it should last you for at least 5 years. If you later decide to change your monitor for a higher refresh rate or a higher resolution one, you'll have the card already.

dang yeah thats a good idea. I might regret trading it..

Definitely hang onto it bud. Graphics cards are scarce, and you are VERY lucky to have got one. Treasure it 🙂

It's similar to my PSU philosophy, why get a PSU that's just enough to serve my present needs? Should I wanna upgrade my GPU, or hell, upgrade my entire system to a more powerful one, I might find that my present PSU not up for the upgrade, hence more money thrown into getting a new PSU.

Like downgrading from RTX 3070 Ti to RTX 3060/3060 Ti, a few years (heck, maybe even two years or so) down the road, you may find yourself needing more GPU processing power (should you step up to a 1440P 144Hz or higher monitor) which the RTX 3060/3060 Ti lacks.

In line with this this philosophy, I always get GPU and PSU with lotsa 'oomph', especially my PSU's. All my three rigs are at least 1kW so that I do not need to worry about PSU upgrade should I add more devices (HDD/AIO/whatever) or even change to a new system.
