Summary

Hackers have stolen valuable information from major game publisher Electronic Arts (EA), the company said.

The attackers claimed to have downloaded source code for games such as FIFA 21 and for the proprietary Frostbite game engine used as the base for many other high-profile games.

News of the hack was first reported by news site Vice, which said some 780GB of data was stolen.

My thoughts

Big company’s like EA, need to look into all areas of the network, to make sure there isn’t a breach where a hacker can access an open port or bypass IPS’s

Haha, maybe someone will finally make FIFA game that has more than 5 face types available.

The sucky part of stolen Frostbite engine means there will be tons of new hacks out there. Given how Battlefield 2042 is planned to be multiplayer only, there are grim times ahead for it. Apex Legends running on Source however won't be affected. It's sucks to be EA at the moment.

there could be a silver lining here, maybe just maybe we could finally get some modding for bf4

"Valuable information", like how many "surprise mechanics" their next games will have and what they are going to call them in the future? Or "valuable" information like the Frostbite engine that is so bad even they themselves have problems developing with it (not to even mention their games)?

This would be amazing. Wrap the source code up in loot boxes. Sell loot boxes to EA. Make sure there's duplicates.

It's not gambling to get your code back.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

DLC just like in the good old days.

Before it's scattered around in loot boxes.

Just hope this is not becoming a security issues in those games, like even more hacking or malware in their games through exploits.

Thankfully it seems that only game data has been taken, which in the grand scheme of things isn't particularly useful (what game company is ever going to risk the legal shitshow that would occur from looking at it, let alone paying for it?) The only people interested in this stuff really will be other hacking groups and modders.

Had the hack involved user or employee data, things would be far more serious.

I’m tired of these negative headlines. You should embrace toxic positivity. The right headline should’ve been “EA is finally open source.”

Considering how bad their games were in the last 5 years EA really needs a slap to the face to wake up.

Instead of making games they are making online casinos - AKA "Live service".

both great and sad, they have made or work with teams to produce some good games or classics still. And not always as bad compared to others, like ubisoft, activision etc.

but somehow EA is always able to or trying to create new issues, how they used loot boxes and got in hot water with the government and used surprise mechanics which shouldn't be classified as gambling or something along those lines.

To the common US "AAA" titles and the problems behind the scenes, to the bigger "player" getting most of the income compared to the workers.

Titanfall 1 & 2 servers have been under attack by a very dedicated attacker for years, it turns out. The important issue is that the attacker has had access to the EA Cloud servers. It doesn't surprise me that the sudden run of information about the Titanfall issues would be followed by other, more serious server compromise issues. I actually suggested to a few people to contact the FBI because something exactly like this would be on the way next.

If one guy with a dedicated amount of hatred for wall-running combat could get into the backside of EA's servers, it's really obvious a competent hacking collective will get in without much trouble and get really valuable data.

You mean every Fifa game?

Judge the product by its own merits, not by the Company that created it.

I've stopped playing Warzone for exactly this problem and had hoped a proper anti-cheat would be built for the new BF game.

Automated anticheat can help but cant replace GMs who can quickly determine if someone is cheating and the anti-cheat did not caught it.... I played only on a few CS:S server precisely because of this, at least one admin was present at any given time and booted out cheaters rather quickly.

The automated anti-cheat in the past few Battlefield games has been kind of useless, and the official EA servers usually have cheaters in them. I think that only way cheaters can get kicked out quickly is if EA allows custom servers that people can run cheat detection on, and IMO its one reason BF4 is still the best BF game.

So many known companies in the news about being hack.

Company hack has not changed, you just see more in the news because it's a large publicly known company. I'd say for each company you hear in the news about a hack you most likely have way more than 10,000 times that amount that you do not know. If someone would tell me it's 1 millions time's more I wouldn't be surprised.
