So my pc has been double booting for about three years, any way someone knows what is causing it?

I have this pc for about 5 years and three years ago I have noticed that it started double booting every time I pressed the power button.

-It starts to boot and all the lights indicate that.

-then after a couple of seconds it stops and two seconds after it powers up again.

I never had an issue that could indicate that the double boot causes it (except two times when my pc froze and i had to restart it and after I did it didn't recognize the actual drive that the os was installed so I had to disconnect all the extra hdd's and ssd's to force it to detect the boot disk).

Other than that I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm thinking of upgrading it in about three weeks. I'm just trying to troubleshoot what's the cause of that and I don't seem to find a solution to this non-existing problem.

Any comments would be helpful

could be an BIOS issue or depends on the system you are having.

Do you have more OS drives connected?

Or if there is a power thing, that might be caused by various things or a temp thing like a failure to read? dunno.

sometimes this indicates a memory overclocking failure.

boot 1, cannot POST because memory settings

boot 2, boots because memory settings set back to default.

Yeah, that's probably it then. I'm using old high-end hardware with a mid-range new gpu so maybe that's what causes it, because I don't even have xmp enabled. Could it be the ram not being compatible with the rest of the components?

Here's a list of the components:

cpu  i7-920

mobo  X58A-UD3R

storage  2 hdd 1tb each, 2 ssd (250,500)

I would check to see if you can get into the bios here and pick defaults, see if that corrects the issue. I think the overclock on the ram is a good path to investigate.

Solved it. I connected my old full sized microsoft keyboard and I needed to press the delete button on the right down side and it worked. No problem with the ram whatsoever. Thanks for your help though!

maybe open BIOS, by that key being the shortcut. As that... could happen? not sure.

Yeah, by that I meant to say "press delete to open the bios". Although after I got the bios to open there was no double posting at all... Then the pc after a day started randomly freezing and I swapped the cable for my os drive. Suddenly it stopped double booting, freezing and I had no trouble whatsoever to get into bios. I believe that was it! I'll be testing and seeing if it double boots again for the next couple of days and I will post an update! Thanks for all the help guys

That's just X58 for you. It can be a little picky..
