B550 or B450 for a ryzen 5 3400g

Budget (¥85000):

Country: Japan

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: valorant, minecraft and school work

Other details (MSI B450-A PRO MAX ATX or a ASUS AMD B550 AM4 Compatible Motherboard TUF GAMING B550-PLUS [ATX] for a Ryzen 3400g,  I'm upgrading from a 3 year old chromebook.     This system wouldn't use a graphics card because the prices are 3x or 4x the original price.

Use the B550, it has a better upgrade path in future.

The B550 chipset doesn't support that cpu. Your options are B450, X470 or X570.

B550. No point whatsoever in going with an outdated board at this point. They're not even really cheaper. However, even if it was equal, the Asus TUF is just a better board, anyways.

Oh crap. I knew that. Yeah, @lee32ukis totally correct. You don't have a choice. You have to go B450. I'd still look for a better B450, though.

Unfortunately, B550 doesn't support the 3200G or 3400G. This was a choice made by AMD for reasons unknown to us. X570 supports it though... which is weird since X570 is higher-end for Zen 2 and 3200G/3400G are lower-end.

Otherwise I'd say yes to B550, but B450 is the only choice.

No, the TUF Gaming 550 is what was asked about in the OP. I quoted the B450 and said it was the only one of the two that would support the 3400g, then gave the QVL list for the 550 that was asked about so OP could look at it themselves too.

If you want something cheap then look at the ASRock B450/M Pro 4. The MSI B450-A PRO MAX is also fine though.

Most boards should be up to date by now. If it says Ryzen 3000 or Ryzen 5000 ready on the box then you are good to go. The MSI B450-A PRO MAX has bios flashback anyway so you don't need a cpu installed.

The current 5000 series is the last gen for AM4 though right? It's changing socket to the new AM5 for the next generation?

The B550 is considerably more expensive compared to B450, so really depends if he plans to go to a higher gen 3000/5000 CPU; I wouldn't really worry about the upgrade path?

Change the 3400G for a 4650G instead. Similar price, better GPU.

3400G has been supported since what looks like the original BIOS. Chances are you won't have to.

That cpu is hard to find for a reasonable price.

B550 doesn’t support zen+. B450 supports the same cpus as b550, plus’s zen+.

you have the same upgrade path with b550 and b450, up to a 16c/32t r9 5950x, though I don’t think anyone would ever run a 5950x in a b450

3200? Like the street price for a 3090, plus the street price for a 3070? Or 320?

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)
