AGP 4x vs PCI

recently i've started to give interest into my old p3 1ghz no heat spreader computer, i tried to plug in the analog when i realised that there's no analog or dvi or hdmi, so what gpu should i get 

agp 4x card or a pci card, the mobo is a gigabyte 6a-vtx rev1.2

AGP is a better GPU bus from what I remember buying and using PCI cards lol

I think you can get a 1GB AGP card if I remember correctly.

On a Pentium 3, there's no point in buying something with more than 128MB of VRAM.

Something like a Geforce FX5200 is already overkill. They're dirt cheap.

I mean, no, not really. For a single PIII around the clocks that OP has, anything along the lines of a 9800 Pro would be great. Hell, you can pick up 6600GT's for fairly cheap too and that'd be pretty baller.

 

For that matter, if the OP had twins like I do, stepping up to something like an HD 3650 or 3850 would be pretty reasonable. Ultimately you'd start to run into games where you'd get limited by lack of extensions, but that's not really the point.

can i even run games, i dont know if my old p3 computer, (which used to be my dads) has windows 98, heck it still uses those chonky sata cablse that take mega space

The later ATI cards have too much driver overhead to properly run on a P3 though, and arguably, W98SE is the best OS for a P3, which cannot take advantage of a 2nd CPU.

 

9800Pro will be bottlenecked by anything less than a 1.4 Tualatin. OP has a Coppermine which honestly wasn't that quick. The Athlons of the era were much more capable.

Older games sure. Theoretically with a single P3 anything sorta 2002-2003 and earlier should be no problem. A lot of the games I ran didn't even utilize my second CPU (or rather, they did but the load was just spread out across both, so total usage was only 50-55%).

 

Also just a lil protip to help you sound like you have some idea of what you're talking about: Those are not "chonky SATA cables," they're more than likely IDE.

nah u rite, obviously all of my first-hand experience with later ATI cards/drivers and P3's is wrong. How foolish of me to think my experiences could have possibly been right. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go stand in the corner and bash my head against a wall.

You have to ask an important question: What do you want to *do* with the PC?

Windows XP, yes, the latest generation AGP cards will run.

Windows 9X?  Well, driver support for AGP cards there stops at the Radeon X800 series from ATi and the Geforce 6 series from nVidia.  Anything newer and drivers don't exist for the OS.

I always assumed AGP was better than PCI (not PCIe) because AGP has its own dedicated bus and a direct link to the CPU, whereas PCI is all done via a shared bus.

PCIe ultimately won out because it's like AGP, with dedicated lanes and direct access to the CPU, but is shared among devices other than just graphics cards.

This is why for my WinXP retro machine I went for the stupid: An i3 3250 and a Radeon HD 6850.  Cheap hardware, fully XP compatible, when when playing games from 2002-2005, it's faster than God.

Getting into late, very high end AGP cards you get into money.  For Windows XP retro gaming you can get unwanted PCIE hardware with full drivers that's OP for the task but the price of dirt.

Yep, the money aspect (and missing extensions) is what got me to abandon dumping money into my twins even though I'm an expert at spending money irresponsibly and I loved the hardware.

 

Now I've got an Athlon II 260 + GTX 960 (eventually plan on throwing a 1055T in it) for most games under Windows 7, and quite a bit later on down the line I'll be buying an A8 3850 for my "spare" board (to replace the A4 3300 in it now) and throwing that into an ML03B with the main use case being games that don't quite play nice with 7. Can never have too much overkill.

I have an A8 3870K in a A75 mATX mobo from Asus if you're interested.  I just hadn't listed it on eBay yet...

It was my original XP PC build but then I decided to go overkill with the HD 6850 and i3.  I wanted to run my XP games at 1600x1200 locked at 60 no matter what it is.  I'm actually using a retro case for it so I had to get a blower model 6850.  Any other kind just floods the poorly ventilated retro case full of heat and the PSU panics.  Blower shoots that heat right out the back.

I'll pass. Still waiting on a car to get un trabajo, and once that's all good there's a tooooon of other things I should dump money into before I start yet another build (including paying said car off).
