'Switch Pro' announcement is imminent, will probably be on sale by Sept/Oct

Originally coming from Bloomberg (paywalled) and confirmed by Eurogamer (it sounds like different sources but that's not confirmed), it looks as though Nintendo will be announcing the Switch Pro within weeks. They want to get it revealed before E3 so they can reveal Switch Pro games at the event.

Nintendo's long-awaited Switch upgrade is expected to be shown ahead of E3 2021, according to a report published by Bloomberg [paywall] today and Eurogamer's own sources.

 

I understand this is to ensure third-parties working on games which support the upgraded Switch are free to announce these projects at E3, and before Nintendo's own digital showcase later in that week.

 

(Nintendo's event has yet to be formally dated but is currently set to slot in after other publishers towards the end of E3, though of course dates can still shift.

 

A pre-E3 airing also allows Nintendo to focus its E3 reveals on its upcoming software line-up, where fans hope to hear updates on the long-awaited The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and long, long-awaited Metroid Prime 4.

Bloomberg also report that the Pro should be on sale by September or October of this year. Apparently the plan is to release the Pro alongside the Lite and phase out the Original entirely.

Switch manufacture has been difficult over the past year, Bloomberg says, with part shortages affecting manufacture. But the Switch is able to avoid the more serious chip shortages which have affected PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as it uses different components.

E3 might actually be worth watching this year, I'd expect some big reveals from MS & Sony for the new gen hardware and hopefully Ninty will show us some Metroid 4 & BOTW2.

So long as it’s backwards compatible with the original Switch games, I may actually be interested. Hadn’t bought a console since my original 3DS. Willing to bet a kidney and limb that I’m going to have to beat some scalpers on the head to get one though.

Even without a chip shortage the switch was sold out for a consistent 2 years so I doubt they won't have supply issues

If it's simply a DLSS 4K dock and an improved battery life it's probably just going to replace the existing Switch (but not the Lite)

 

If it's actually a 4K-capable unit, docked or not, I'm hesitant to believe that the unit itself will be 4K since that would make the screen rather expensive, though it might be upgraded to 1080p or 1440p it it actually has the performance for it. But also "4K" DLSS on dock doesn't really impress upon me as a reason to upgrade, only an incentive for people who were holding out on getting the original model.

 

Which brings the next point up, I'm sure it will probably have a scalper problem, but unlike the PS5, there is no shortage of existing Switch/Switch Lite units out there, and people aren't going to overpay for this. I couldn't find one at launch, and I gave up. Same with the NES and SNES Mini's (which ultimately were kinda trashy cash-in's anyway, being less capable than third party emulators.)

A lot of people seem to be confused about the Switch Pro getting 4k. It will be 4k output while docked, but the resolution of the onboard display will definitely be the same as the current Switch consoles (720p) or maybe get a bump to 1080p (though it's unlikely unless it doesn't cost as much). Nintendo wouldn't add a 4k screen to a console where the PPI would be so small that it's literally unnoticeable without a microscope. Speaking of the display, I don't know why people keep expecting a hypothetical Switch Pro console to have an OLED display. Nintendo has always been trying to appeal to consumers who don't want to break the bank on a console, so adding OLED to the console would drive up the price and introduce the risk of burn-in. I know there's a feature on the current Switch that negates it, but it's still possible, and Nintendo's already got issues with Joy-Con drift, so they might find it in their best interest to avoid using components that would have foreseeable issues in the future. 

 

The most I can see us getting out of an updated console is 4k30 (or most likely 1440p60) output while docked with hardware that potentially offers a 20-30% performance improvement in games over the OG Switch. Also, the battery capacity will probably have to be larger as well to accommodate the newer hardware. 

 

That aside, if Nintendo was already considering a new console, they probably would have held off on revealing new gameplay trailers (like Pokemon: Arceus Legends, which looked like crap in terms of performance) that were rendered on the existing console until after the Switch Pro was announced and developer copies were distributed for testing and rendering.

Seems like it could be useful for people with nice TVs, but I don't have a 4K set lol. I'm probably better off putting the $300 in an index fund. 

I hope they don't go with OLED, IMO it's one of the worst display technologies due to modern LCDs being able to reach good black levels without burn-in. Not to mention that many games have static HUDs.

There are at least boundaries to Nintendo's stupidity. The design of the Switch's OS was stupid, but the concept of a home/portable hybrid console was something I've anticipated after the Wii U launched and it's more unique than just a DS with 3D or a Wii with a gamepad that has limited bluetooth range. I would say the Switch itself was the opposite of stupid; it was genius.

I definitely agree with you on OLED. It doesn't matter how much OLED has improved, burn-in is STILL possible, and until there's an OLED display that can be left on with a static image on maximum brightness for a full month and not get burn-in, I would rather stick with the IPS display they've been using on the Switch and Switch Lite. Plus, I'd prefer it if Nintendo sunk the cost of the console into the performance improvements rather than a 7" display with a different panel that not as many people will notice/yield the visual benefits from. It might look nice, but the visual improvement for the cost is just a waste on a tiny display.

 

Regarding how much they've changed from prior consoles, yeah, Nintendo sorta went a completely different route this time around. No menu music, things like the Mii editor are just shoved into Settings, the home menu is very bland, and they've opened up a lot to 3rd-party Indie titles, which is kind of strange considering you could just play most 3rd-party titles on platforms that perform far better.

The Switch is kinda soulless compared to other Nintendo consoles IMO. 

I guess the reason to buy 3rd party Switch games is portability. That was my reasoning when I got Crash N' Sane trilogy (it helped I was at the Nintendo NY store), but once I saw the PC version I regretted it...

I don't think the Switch Pro is going to be a completely different console family, it's just going to be the existing Switch but with better hardware. The question, though, is what specifically is going to be improved. As for scalpers, yeah, you'll definitely have to fight them.
