Graphics card stays at 50% usage

Chronicl3

After upgrading my build it seems like my GPU is the one at fault but it could be the drivers since this is a rx 480

All of the part's except my GPU where upgraded so most of my hardware isn't the problem

If you need anything to help just ask and I'll post

In which case you should not be using task manager. Try using GPUZ.

Besides, are you not getting the performance you expect?

When using GPUZ it reports the same usage info as AMD adrenaline or MSI afterburner peaks of 95% and then it dips to 0

The person who used the GPU before me (My brother) said it never had this problem

I don't know if all of the read's are miss read but that's why I created this to finally get some answers to this

Yes, the problem is that when a GPU is working as hard as it can on your game, task manager will not necessarily say 100%. It may instead say 50%, because while you are maxing out "3D" to 100%, "Copy" or "Video" or whatever is at 0%, and the average is 50%, so task manager shows 50% because it combines or averages them in a stupid, unintuitive way.

OK... we could have a very 'sketchy' build, here.

First thing; did you build the machine straight into the case w/o test booting it?

Secondly; what's the full component list...?

yes every part in my PC except the GPU was replaced so for my that was the most logical conclusion

Don't worry about him. This is the information I need from you, because you have not made it clear yet.

  1. Is your GPU always at 50%, or is it only at 50% in games.
  2. Is 50% what task manager is telling only? Is something else telling you this? When task manager says 50%, what is GPUZ saying?
  3. Are you getting the performance that you would otherwise expect? What frame rate are you getting, what framerate do you expect, and what game are we talking about?

It is my strong suspicion, that your system is functioning properly, and that task manager is misreporting usage, as it is well known to do. For that to be case the answers to the above questions would look like this:

  1. It is not always at 50% usage. It is only when there is a game running.
  2. Task Manager is saying 50% and nothing else. When task manager reports 50%, GPUZ is reporting near 100%.
  3. The performance is good and as expected, with some small irrelevant problems in game XYZ.

Please be thorough, precise, and concise with your answer. I say this, because you have not done so thus far.

sorry about not being precise I was kinda multitasking at the time and sorry about this reply being so late needed to relax before I blew a casket

1. the gpu never reaches 100% in games or doing anything else, gaming is the most stressful thing I do on this pc

2. when task manager was telling me 50% so was MSI afterburner, GPUZ reported that GPU usage went from 100% down to 0% every few seconds so did AMD adrenaline

3. Some Game's run fine with a hitch here and there but these are ultimately rare I'm just wondering if all of these programs are misreading the card or am I leaving performance on the table. I'll attach AMD adrenaline's stats on the bottom of the message

Once I play a game I'll screenshot GPUZ, MSI afterburner, task manager and AMD adrenaline and send them in a separate image

Thing's that might be relevant

Could try using MSI AB to monitor CPU Core usage and Core clock for all of your cores, assuming you already monitor GPU usage and clock. Play some games and then look at the graphs, looking for anything happening to CPU while GPU usage is low..

Hi CPU core usage is very stable and doesn't go down or up in correlation with the GPU going down on GPUZ
