Even if I don't know the answer off the top of my head, I can probably try to approach a problem in a way the asker of the question probably didn't think of and find a solution that way, and I have my understanding of that issue and the internet at my disposal to work at that. It's also how I learned that ASRock has a strange penchant for making AM4 boards with SODIMM support...

people have different experience and may come to different conclusion, doesn't mean they're always right (or wrong)

 

if you don't agree with what someone says, rather than reacting disagree, quote them and explain why, so the OP will have context and understanding from more sides as well

Something that only holds up well on paper.

Reputation systems, downvotes, etc.. all prime for being gamed and abused.

A verification system would add a rather uncomfortable layer of control and another power system that needs overnight.

There's only so many people. As it stands, best thing to do is report using the current system when someone is being detrimentally unhelpful.

I've done it before and it was dealt with quickly.

We have new builders coming here for advice on their PC's, and inexperienced enthusiasts coming and confusing the answers. They don't know who to trust, everyone acts like they know what's best.

 

The amount of arguments we get into with eachother is insane, it'd be nice if we could all be on the same page (*or at least know who to trust).

I'm finding it harder and harder to disagree with that sentiment.......

 

I probably just need to unfollow MOTF and stop trolling status updates. It's mostly far better outside of those areas.

That sounds like a nightmare. The best solution is to have educated enough people who don't blatantly take anything they read on a website as fact. Ideally you should be tabulating info from various sources and checking for inconsistencies or simply going to the original documentation. Your proposed solution might sound good on paper but it will never work and will lead to unwanted bias and politics.

Couple of things.

 

Any negative reputation system is nope. It won't work, it would cause more annoyance and cyberbullying than anything good. Just go to Reddit if you like that kind of system for validation.

 

Instead, if you disagree or think someone is wrong, you can and should reply to them, correcting them and hope that they will stop spreading misinformation.

 

If there is someone purposely posting misinformation or confusing people, you should report them. Thats low-key and full-on trolling which already is against the rules. Moderation has hard time rooting out these troublemakers if we don't know who they are.

Does not go towards any rep, and to show that others MAY disagree with the point or if they state it as a fact.

 

else titles (like under the post count by color or single color change under your name, like showing if you are an novice, veteran or "expert" in said tech field or working with it. AI, Digital systems, Coding C#, etc.

It's not 100% perfect, but please remember the power of numbers. When you're worried about 1 comment leading someone astray, you seem to be forgetting the 10-20 comments replying to the bad information saying how bad it is. The inexperienced helper is far outweighed by experienced ones most of the time. Or it can even be outweighed by inexperienced googlers, which I often am for certain topics. I'll even say "I'm not an expert on this but...". Adding a negative system of feedback or a positive system of rewarding through clicks is just heading to reddit as someone else said. Furthermore, there's no guarantee that those awarding commenters will be correct. They might think the wrong answer sounds right and start upvoting it en masse, and soon we have people who are very wrong being marked as geniuses. The current reputation system is already controversial as it is easily abused, and another system like that won't help. It should always fall down to common sense and critical thinking. If a bunch of people are responding the same thing and 1 person says the opposite, more than likely the 10 are on the right track. This is a tech forum, so most here should have some sense of basic troubleshooting logic, and if they don't just ignore them. If they're intentionally misinforming, report it. That's all we need to keep this place as nice as possible.

There are 2 types of people on this forum: People that join to ask 1 question and never post anything else, and people like me, who joined to ask 1 question, then began answering the questions of others. Before I knew it I had answered 800 questions. People like me usually speak from experience, and there are times I've answered something the way I thought was right and gotten absolutely torn apart in 14 replies to my comment. So I call it 'self moderation' where members fact check other members. 

 

I tend to trust people with more reputation and a higher post count, and also people that have been members for longer than a month.

Even on technical or trade forums they're moving away from downvote systems as it really doesn't do anything other than alienate someone and discourage discussion and responses to questions. Even people who are extremely experienced/knowledgeable can be wrong so slamming someone with downvotes simply discredits that person as a source even though they generally provide good input. Then you have subject matter that is less fact based and more debatable/scenario specific. Does a person on a debatable topic deserve down votes because people on the other side of the coin disagree?

 

At the end of the day if you want concrete information you should never be travelling on open forums but rather consulting research papers, whitepapers and textbooks. Forums are intended for discussion and should stay that away by creating positive reinforcement rather then punishment to encourage discussion.  

 

Downvote systems create nothing but shit shows like Stackoverflow (primarily a programming forum) which while it can be an extremely useful resource (sometimes), it is often intimidating for newbies because they will be drawn, hung and quartered by there downvote system.
