Nvidia officially announces "Lite Hash Rate" GPUs for RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, and 3080. Ships late May

I think it's a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.

- Good because it will help with selling prices, as lower hash rate is directly in correlation with the selling price in the current market.

- Bad because it's an artificial limitation to the consumer and that's always bad.

But in this case (and seeing how the GPU market gets worse each month) the good outweighs the bad imo.

Hardware Unboxed recently did a survey asking their audience if they are for or against artificial limits to the hash rate. Around 60% were in favor or the limit. So the majority of users are okay with it from what it seems.

If it costs half as much but performs half as well, the ROI should be about the same I would think

The ROI will be the same if it’s half the price. Bitcoin is a bubble right now that looks like it’s starting to collapse. It’s already down 23% this month. Also ethereum 2.0 is coming so buying new GPUs to mine seems like a riskier investment by the day if you’re paying scalper prices.

"Lite Hash Rate" - ships - never!

If the supply will ever catch up.

All they have to do is make 1 small change to existing cards keep it on seperate drivers and make sure not to leak any drivers that unlocks it, ideally it would need both a driver + firmware upgrade to unlock at which point if they did leak a driver by accident it would still be limited and need one more barrier to go past.

only old cards prices that are gonna go to the moon

AMD isn't being judgemental, just saying

Do you mean the old cards sold by retailers or customers like scalpers?

Only time will tell if LHR editions will hold the same current prices for the non-LHR or not but I doubt the prices will be 'normal'.

Honestly, I wouldn't cheer just yet

But if I were to judge from the 2017/2018 crash, the price dropped but it was significantly higher than before the bubble, I remember I got into bitcoin around July 2017, it was about $1500 I think

After the crash it was around $5000, with occasionally drop to $3000

We'll see what happens

My PCs: Desky | Beddie | Miney | Benchie

Things I need help with: (nothing at the moment)

Spoiler

none atm

I hate Intel's pricing, Ryzen's weird quirks, Nvidia's pricing, and Radeon GPUs in general

Spoiler

Products I like:

Spoiler

Sony Xperia Z1 / Z2 / 10 ii, Asus Strix 970 / 1070, Samsung SSD, WD HDD, Corsair PSUs (AX, RM, CX(grey)), GeForce GPU, NZXT N450/S340, be quiet! Coolers, G.Skill Trident RAM, Logitech M525, Logitech G440, Razer Deathadder Elite

Products I hate:

Spoiler

Xperia Z3, XiaoMi 5c, Radeon GPUs, Razer Audio Products, any bloatwares

Companies I absolutely adore: (and hope it stays that way)

Spoiler

be quiet! - sent me AM4 mounting for my DRP3 even though it's way past the timeframe stated, no questions asked

Corsair - very good RMA experience, absolutely recommend

Companies I hate:

Spoiler

Nvidia, Intel, Apple, TMT (Thundermatch, a retailer)

Personal Blacklisted Companies:

Spoiler

Acer: shit tier quality products, shit tier customer service thus far, they "tried" to solve my issue but they arent really doing anything but delaying and delaying. (on-going case since July)

Gigabyte: horrible customer service (gigabyte had literally 0 customer service, asked me to go to retailer with NO WAY to email them about a question) but at least they fixed my shit in ONE MONTH (would probably take me 1 hour to fix if they let me email them)

XiaoMi Phones: built like a tank but the software is buggy as all hell

Seagate HDD: had too many dead seagate drives

Kingston SSD: 300V controller swap thingy

Razer (except their mouse)

Remember, just because I had good/bad experiences with these companies/product, doesn't mean you will have similar experiences too. I would still recommend these products if they made sense for your needs, but I'll add a disclaimer of my experience if it's relevant. Feel free to DM me asking why they are where they are.

I’m just so tired. And this won’t help me get a 3090 FE, only make it worse.

Maybe this GPU-free rig can just be a monument, to gaming past. Series X plays games well enough, I might be a living room gamer now. So long, Steam, I never caught up with my game library but now I’m freeeeeeeeee!

Even if Nvidia put this down to a 25% LHR, I doubt it would make a dent in miners snatching them up at retail...

The only way this will be solved is if all current RTX cards have no hash rate available. If they intend to carry out this stupid "crypto card" lineup, future gaming and rendering cards may even need an HoC on the board to avoid their use for mining.

They should limit 1 gpu per system per driver in the future may have even bigger impact on miners, as sli is not really supported anymore anyway

My local store has each of them priced at about 200$+. So 3070s for 500, 3080s for 900. I've never seen a 3060ti, 3060, or 3090 there though.

But the 3070 and 3080 are usually there, Asus sends them a couple of each a week or so.

some of that might be because of tariffs and OEM price hikes.

Well, some professional work does not require any Quadro-specific features. For example, video rendering only needs a large amount of VRAM, multiple RTX 3090's should do the work.

By the way, NVIDIA Quadro is just bulls**t, as they limit some features to the Quadro lineup and tell the GeForce users who want to do some professional work "go f**k yourselves and buy a Quadro card". The same thing happens again right now, as they releases the CMP lineup.

That will piss off a lot of people who have multiple GPUs in their system for F@H, like me. And I've only got 2 cards. There are MANY people with 5+ cards for F@H.

That's why they won't do it.

That wouldn't work, either someone would find a way around it, and it could probably be bypassed with GPU passthrough, and 1 GPU per system would only punish the people that have a use for more than 1 card for F@H, BOINC, or output to a lot of monitors.

They wont/can't do it for historic cards for much the same reason as LHR cards, that's changing what a product that was already sold was doing. Not saying they have a reason to, but if they did want to, it could also be implemented in future cards in a similar way to LHR.

If they want to lock it down, they can. We've still yet to see the original mining lock broken in any meaningful way, the worst being their own driver blunder.

The question will be how to separate out the markets, and provide best value for each. Does a gamer need more than one card in a single system? No, even more so since the demise of SLI. Does a gamer need to drive that many monitors? You can typically connect 4 to a single GPU right now. How many people genuinely use more than that if they're not doing something really niche?

The productivity use case is where it gets more complicated. How much gamer-tier software can use more than one GPU? Use cases of dedicating extra hardware to BOINC or folding are extremely niche. I think it would be nice if there was a more affordable pro tier GPU series. Essentially similar to gaming series, with the difference of ECC ram as standard for example. That would be a welcome differentiator to any serious use case, and would in part provide a valid cost delta. Do not confuse this with the high FP64 compute cards which can be another tier in itself.
