I bought a 5800x from best buy and I got scammed

Hello yesterday I decided to order a 5800x and I wanted to get it faster so I decided to pick it up in store. This is my first computer build and I don’t really know how the back of the cpu usually looks like the box looked normal and unopened  but I tried to put it in a socket but it wouldn’t fit I posted a submission on r/AMDHelp and someone told me I should post it on the form so I specifically made a account for it. I will most likely return to Best Buy and explain the situation to them and hope I get a replacement part. I have a x570 asus rog motherboard so it should take a 5000 series chip and I also updated the bios for it a while ago. I hope no one else falls for a scam like this.

i would suggest you go to the one you bought it at.

since i'm not sure if the other store will allow you to return a product bought in a different store.

It’s Best Buy, as long as I have a proof of purchase that it’s from another Best Buy  store they can take it

Go to the one you bought it at. They'll at worst give you in store credit. Going to a different one is a big suspicious.

yep as the person said, it will look suspicious. Still if you are persistent yet nice, and don't look like a criminal, you should technically be fine to go wherever another one is in stock. best of luck

Well less then a day later I went to a bestbuy that had two 5800x’s in stock and I wanted to trade my old one in but turns out that the one that i opened in front of him was also a fake! I opened another one and it was the same situation both boxes were never tampered with at all I don’t know how this situation would happen, where a new box was tampered with without it being opened a Best Buy but i feel like something is going on behind the scenes

Unrelated but I returned a faulty EVGA CLC to Best Buy and the associate told me they couldn't refund me because the serial numbers didn't match. I felt so mortified because now I felt they thought I was trying to scam them. I ended up calling EVGA and they told me "hey there's 2 serial numbers on there, one from Asetek and one from us" Went back in, showed them the correct serial and explained there's 2 different ones because EVGA doesn't make the radiator, and got the refund.

But it sure as hell felt bad being softly accused of trying to scam them.

It doesn't take much to remove a sticker. This is a scam that has been around for forever but seems to finally start coming into the public light due to the scammers overdoing it and a big personality finally picking up on it.

Most likely those were also returns that were not checked, or it could be someone from the warehouse/store swapping the products. The seal or sticker on these boxes can be easily removed with damaging the packaging, then once the item inside has been swapped the old sticker is put back or a new one is put there instead.

How? And how to kinda fix it? (Maybe)

One way to remove a label without leaving any marks is to warm it up with a heat gun, this will soften the glue and make it easy to peel of.

So what should be checked is if the label changes to the color black when warmed up with a heat gun, because if it does not, then this is a problem and might make the label reusable, which is bad. So using labels that change color would be one way of preventing someone from swapping the items inside and returning it (unless they have new labels to put on the box).

There is another way to kinda maybe fix these problems, and that is to use a wax seal with a special set of stamps.
