Summary

Eufy cam users saw other users' cam feeds in their apps and are now (obviously) worried that others' could see theirs. While a re-login helped, others might still be able to access their cameras...

A 9to5Mac writer confirmed the issue.

Could see all details, recordings, live (edited). It was like I was logged in as the person.

 

My thoughts

I feel terrified thinking about others seeing my children with me having no control whatsoever. Luckily I don't have any cameras installed in the house, at least none that are permanently powered on and/or connected to the internet. I think in a situation like that I'd do the exact same thing as the 9to5mac article suggests: "For now, the smart thing would be to disable all Eufy cameras."

And this, my friends, is yet another example of why the gratuitous and relentless connection of devices to the internet in the never-ending pursuit of "smart"-ness is what we call an absolutely f***ing terrible idea.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

This isn’t new at all. I used to browse thousands of open cameras as a kid and you had full camera control too.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Well there is a big difference between having unprotected cameras (or none secure passwords), and having Eufy accidentally let arbitrary users access cameras.  These weren't open cameras

 

As a security camera portion of their company, one would expect there to be zero slip ups or safeguards in place.  A single software update should not open up users like this did (and give other users access).  My guess would be that the tokens they used to identity users got scrambled in the update.

 

I'm just hoping that things like this happen enough to force manufactures to allow full control to the users.  Like encrypting video before being sent, so only the password can decrypt the data.  Yes, it means if you forgot your password you wouldn't have access (but I'd rather have to reset passwords and lose prior recordings than have others able to snoop on it)

Fixed it for you.  This, and similar, has happened with other companies in the past, and will keep happening, because security is always evolving and software bugs are always being written.  The only difference this time appears to be that the update itself was so bad that it didn't even need an outside security issue to cause breaches.

Only recently replaced a floodlight over my garage with a eufy floodlight cam. Flirted with the idea of buying some indoor cams and then promptly reminded why this is not worth pursuing.

Couldn't agree more - As I said in the post I luckily don't have any internet connected cameras in-home cameras that are constantly powered on - and I'm not planning on getting any. 🙂
