PSU shorted after 4+4 pin connected to mobo

BigGrease

Brand new system being built

5800x

b550 strix

32gb hyperx 3600

EVGA b5 550

i was just building a new system from my old intel 6600k platform and i bench tested the new components on the mobo box. plugged in 24pin board lit up nice. turned off psu plugged in the only cable 4+4 eps into mobo

flipped the switch. then shorted pwr btn pin on mobo then it popped.

just wondering if the psu was at fault or pluggin into 4+4 into 8pin eps connector on mobo

btw all components are fine... using it on my case with a hx850i.

You didn't use the HX850i 4+4-pin cable with your EVGA PSU, did you?

no i did not

i was only using the 550 to check for post.

i then set the mobo into my main chassis and just plugged in quick and it booted fine.

i only bought this other psu to power my old system.

So you used the B5 550W with all of the B5's cables and it popped... but everything still works with the HX850i?

yes the psu worked fine without the cpu connection then i plugged in the eps connector then it just shorted quickly.. i moved the system into my machine with the hx and it booted up fine... btw i took it back to memx and they exchanged it for a new one, and this new replacement works flawlessly.
