Why does ultralight support suck throughout all of PC gaming

minibeas

I was very excited and very happy when I was giving my ultra wide monitor. I have been able to use it for many productivity activities. And having websites side by side or document side by side is amazing. My issue is I'm trying to play more games with cinematic widescreen but they only ever partially support Ultra wide. The biggest grievance so far has been Mass effect legendary edition which said it would support the game in ultrawide. However when playing the game I realized that half the game is in 16 by 9 with the cinematic cutscenes... But the steam page says it supports Ultra wide..  and this is a common problem that I've seen with many games over the past 10 years. Ultralight gaming should not be that hard to support it should just be as simple as a resolution change in an ini file... Yet because of console gaming there doesn't seem to be any interest in supporting ultra-wide at all on any platform other than PC.. often times I'm having to try to download hacks to support Ultra wide... It doesn't seem like it would be that complex of an issue to support can someone explain to me why this is such a hard future to support???

I will even go on Disney Plus and try to watch a movie on my browser only to find that it does not actually support my full resolution... I don't know what the deal is or if there's such a low user base then why the hell did I get an ultra wide monitor to begin with?

It's not because of consoles, it's because 21:9 is used by a very small minority of gamers. I'd wager they're more common for productivity stuff, and even there they're far less common than standard 16:9 or the also sorta rare 16:10 monitors.

UWs are a m a z i n g if your main game supports them, if you don't hardcore play one title, or that title doesn't support em, you just have to move back to 16:9 (tis what I did since I was playing a lot of Fallout 4 and it just doesn't work at all with UWs, all the mods to make it do so are out of date and broken).

My expectation for when a game says they support Ultra wide they don't just support Ultra wide for half their game. They support Ultra wide for the actual in-game cinematic cutscenes like the store page says... And this makes no sense not to support in games cinematic which are in game not rerender therefore they should be allowed to support ultra-wide. Now I have to wait about another 6 months for a mod to come out to fix the issue when they could have fixed the issue themselves...

And I wonder why more people don't do Walter want gaming this is precisely why because of really bad support we're over half the game is not fixed for Ultra wide monitors. It's in-game cutscenes not free rendered truck scenes and they already redid them if they were recorded cutscenes....

What in the world did you try to say here?

I for one will never "Walter".  Doesn't sound fun at all.

I bought my UW because it's big, curved, and fills my peripheral vision with screen real estate so that games are a little more immersive for me.

Eh, I've never had as many problems as you have....but I also don't expect older games to support them. Why on earth would you expect consoles to support something they'll hardly ever be connected to? That doesn't make much sense. Either way, it's not like you're losing out on something just because the games don't support the ratio. You're still getting the exact experience you would on a regular monitor, plus the advantage of the UW experience when available. If you can't overlook the black bars on the sides well...that's kind of a personal problem.

But on their store paints they said that they support Ultra wide and I would expect it to support Ultra wide for the in-games in the Maddox which are half the game

What is Maddox?

UW are very much supported these days, they just don't give you an advantage in a lot of shooters tho.  They stretch the 16:9 so that you and a regular monitor owner are equal.  In RPG's (for example) tho, you get more.

Because film's ratio is nearer the UW ratio than 16:9.  But I would argue that a 21:9 is a better gaming monitor than a productivity one.  I much before 2 or 3 regular monitors to my UW for work.

I think the OP is bitching just to bitch.  From his grammar, he's either young and not sure what he was buying or non-english native and having trouble phrasing his true problem.

Most likely the games he plays. Also seems like he's taken issue with the way some companies describe their UW support...not sure why he thinks that extrapolates to UW as a whole. I've never had an issue, and even in games that don't support it, it's not a huge problem; just some black bars on the side. Well worth the trade off for the experience the rest of the time.

Ultrawide support was ultimately the reason for me to switch back to 16:9. After 2 years of using ultrawide i was just sick of having to tweak and mod games to properly display on my monitor. And like you said in your OP, even streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon, Disney won't correctly use your 21:9 format to fill out your screen and get rid of the black bars. Instead you will have black bars on all 4 sides of the movie.

For the price of a 34" 144Hz ultrawide you can also get a 27" 4K 144Hz monitor, which is the better choice imo.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

As far as media is concerned TV manufactures settled on 16:9. Its just how it is. Now that being said, several Netflix shows/Movies do support Ultra wide.

As far as games. Well thats up to the devs. Most games I play support my Ultrawide fine. Killing Floor 2, just doesnt. Ive gotten use to the black bars on the side. I wont go back to a 16:9 panel. Hell I got 2 ultra wides, because Why the Hell NOT. I got monitor real-estate for days.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
