Which was the first racig game to have licensed cars?

VirusDumb

So I was playing the pepegamod for nfs most wanted 2005, which has a tons of cars, including the cybertruck, the 2020 ford gt, the rimac concept one, so, i have never seen these cars in real life, and thus it was kind of fun driving them, the cybertruck and rimac concept one feel very weird to drive because of no engine sound(they sound like a hair dryer), the cybertruck only has 2 gears.

So I thought,hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......, I wonder how hard the modders had worked to put the cars and make sure they work like real life, the devlopers have been doing it since the 90s, and then I thought is there any 80s/ early 90s video game which has real life cars? and which was the first game to have real life cars? or which were the first cars to be in a game?

and seems like googling doesn't work 😞

I'm fairly certain it was a ferrari in some sort of arcade game (like an actual arcade box in the mall) from the 80s or 90s.

Fuck you scalpers, fuck you scammers, fuck all of you jerks that charge way too much to tech-illiterate people.

People must be getting younger around here but of course you have to bring up Gran Turismo.

I'm not sure how to really find the information but i'm guessing its one of the earliest if not THE earliest title to have relationships made with the actual manufacturers. Development started for it in 1992.

The 2 earliest examples of games having real life cars I know of/can find are both from 1986. First was Segas Out-Run which had a Ferarri Testarossa and the second is Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge which had an Esprit in it.

Lotus Challenge was licensed however I'm not convinced Sega had any kind of license for Out-Run.

That depends on your definition of 'Licensed'.  I think you mean Sega's 'Outrun' but while it included the Ferrari Testarossa, it was an unlicensed appearance.  There are some builds of the ROM used in re-releases with the sprite swapped for 'Generic Red Sports Car' even.

Though the later Outrun 2 from the early 2000s was fully licensed.

So do we mean 'Games with licensed cars' or 'Games with real cars, screw licenses'? 😛

Ferrari is kinda like Nintendo in terms of Cease & Desists. They just don't get as much coverage because it is usually in regards to Celebrities and their social media posts. Like one celebrity was flexing his newest addition to his sneaker collection on the back of his Ferrari 812 Superfast and Ferrari issued a Cease & Desist because they thought the post would create a sort of link between the two brands that Ferrari was not a fan of. They didn't wish to be associated with the sneakers. No way Ferrari would led the game make much of a published run without a license.

Edit: @CerealExperimentsLain corrected me, I guess Ferrari wasn't as much of a bitch in the legal department back then.

I found this was quite the theme in the 1990s where we saw a sorta transition.  A lot of games featured 'real cars, real guns, and others' then renamed things. Counter-Strike even had 'Real Weapon Names' and now has 'slightly different names' for, I presume, license reasons.  Transport Tycoon has builds with both names like 'Boeing 747' which was later changed to 'Darwin 300' in later games.  There was def a time when 'They just included real names of things' and were not afraid of licenses beyond like using the 'NFL' or 'MLB' licenses, but now everything seemingly has a license to see it included by it's real name.

AM General tried to sue Activision in 2017 for including their HUMVEE in the CoD games.  Though Activision one with the judge basically saying 'It's a war game, you see HUMVEEs in war, they can represent this weapon of war without a license'.  Meanwhile, Command & Conquer Remastered swapped the HUMVEE name for 'Light Scout' in 2020.

Companies aren't like that, many are super easy to piss off and send cease & Desists. Unless it is a blatant parody.

Likely it was just because this was the early days of licensing issues and they didn't know how to handle it so they let the first one fly.

Yeah, back in the 80s it was like wild west for video games, everyone was ripping off everyone and nobody really respected licenses. It never got too bad on the major platforms (Nintendo & Sega) but over here in Europe where home computers ruled we had all manor of knock off and even some straight up IP theft.

I had heard that to make Out-Run the games developer basically rented a car, used it to take pictures of then used the pictures to create the car in game.

No clue. They sure made it a headache though. it was NOT worth the money to go to court to keep your post of you flexing your sneakers. Plenty of Cease & Desists are illegitimate, but if they come from a big company you need to comply unless you can afford to fight them. Even if you win, making the initial investment to hire lawyers usually is enough to deter anyone from fighting big corporations.

The problem with lawsuits is that they can be long and expensive and often large corporations simply use the threat of an expensive lawsuit, even if they wouldn't win, to get what they want.  'Hey, do what we want, you're welcome to challenge us but it'd cost you 4 years of your life and a few million dollars even if you win.'

yeah it seems like we have two actual questions here

1. What was the first game to depict a real car?

2. What was the first game to depict a real car and actually license it as opposed to just hoping the car companies wouldn't take notice of this new-fangled "video games" thing?

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.
