TSMC-AMD Role Reversal - TSMC Plans to Use EPYC

As the time comes for TSMC to upgrade it's own servers and compute capabilities it looks towards one of it's own customers to supply the hardware, that being AMD. All businesses accept that all hardware they buy will need to be replaced and as such often replace or augment current hardware with new machines. TSMC has chooses to field the EPYC 7702P, a 64-core, 2.0Ghz chips to replace their current hardware. This is a single socket chip and will be running in HPE servers.  As many of you know TSMC produce semiconductors for a wide range of clients including AMD, Apple, QUALCOMM and many others.

It is interesting to see that OEMs are directly pushing customers to use AMD hardware.

It is good to see companies as large as TSMC recognising the advantages that come with AMD EPYC

My thoughts

As we can see EPYC is slowly started to get rolled out by more large customers. Performance, density, efficiency and IO are all advantages that can be enjoyed with EPYC. Another great advantage of AMD EPYC is price-to-performance, where it has been reported in the past that compared to Intel chips you can see a benefit ranging from 1.8-4 times. 

 

I don't think it is all that surprising that TSMC would choose AMD, not only is the fact that the processors are made on TSMCs own 7nm process but Zen has matured over the last few years and is now more well known and respected by the tech community. 

 

We have seen AMD being chosen for a number of high profile HPC projects over the last couple years and with good reason, they really are some EPYC chips.

I wonder if TSMC is buying the CPUs from AMD or if they're taking some of the silicon wafers before AMD gets their hands on them?

Seeing as these are purchased through HPE, they will be bought from AMD. Plus, I'm pretty sure AMD would have an issue with TSMC basically stealing products.

I think this is just some basic business sense from TSMC. They're just taking advantage of a good server product from AMD, with the added benefit that it's directly from their own foundries.

Makes sense. There's been a huge increase in AMD and ARM based systems leaving HPE

To be clear, TSMC isn't just picking products off of their assembly line. These machines are being bought from a Vendor, who will supply the whole thing.

 

I don't know how many servers they're installing, but could you imagine the amount of labour costs if they had to pay someone to literally install each CPU into the server? On top of that, it's not even clear if TSMC handles final assembly of the actual product you get. A CPU might not be "functional" by the time it leaves their fabs, as additional assembly might be required still.

GloFo is the IOD and the contract period signed is the EPYC 7003 sale lifecycle, as well as Ryzen 5000 for that matter, so this is fairly standard affair. It's not actually anything new or out of the normal.

 

I have yet to hear anything about future IOD designs and processes at all.

didnt tsmc and glofo come to cross license deal which could mean glofo could actually get something similar to tsmc 7nm process going?

Not sure, I know they had some legal stuff going on but can't find which process(s) it was about other than TSMC counter suit which was for 12nm processes and larger. An agreement was signed, what for I don't know/can't remember.

Last I heard GloFo stopped all but were trying to get more funding to bring a 7nm on line and increase larger nodes in Singapore for automotive and power IC.

yeah same here all i remember is they stopped trying because of expense of going and possible patent infringement on their part too

think tsmc sued them first for couple dozen patent infringements and they turned around and sued for those 16

think thats why tsmc easily did the cross patent thing cause tsmc is already having 5 4 and 3 in the works

which tsmc could have done the legal battle and prolly hurt glofo in legal fees but hurt themselves on their older nodes

not sure though been too busy with adulting to take time to read actual truths
