Slow Wi-Fi for 10 Years

DetectiveBirb

So I should probably start off with explaining my issue. My Family and I have been dealing with 3MBps Speeds for about 10 years now and were sick of it. Netflix run slow, Online games are unplayable unless there's 2 people on the wifi, Youtube videos are on 240p and there's constant disconnects every couple of hours. There's no other ISP's near us that can supply any faster wifi and Bell being Bell does jack shit to fix it. We have complained to them for so long yet we have got nothing out of it.

Anything that would help with wifi speeds would be really helpful, please lmk.

-Side note we are looking into getting Starlink once it gets into our area.

Well, even though 25Mbps is not great, it's better than 3Mbps, so the most immediate issue would be fixing the WiFi. How long have you had the box? If it's really old it could be something like G or N. The answer could be as simple as getting a separate wireless AC or AX router, and disabling the WiFi on the modem.

We just got the Modem replaced 3 days ago when we called bell about it. They claim a firmware update was the issue.

Something else seems to be the problem if your internet speed is reporting correctly but the actual usage is not.

Well, even still, kit from ISPs is almost universally crap. I'd try a separate router. If it does nothing, you can always return it.

Ones in Megabytes per second, Ones in Megabits per second. Still could also be alot of load on the single router, we did look into trying out a cheaper Mesh Wifi System to see if it had any effect.

So you're using the term wifi correctly? meaning the actual wireless signal inside your house, not wifi just meaning "internet".

What happens if you connect directly to the router via ethernet on as many devices as you can, do drop outs still occur? (check this using pingplotter)

You could try changing the channel on the router as it might be on a congested frequency or getting a new wireless card/usb receiver for your PC just in case that is dying.

because 22mbps should be perfectly usable

Personally my laptop is running wired which is why its getting 22Mbps rn during the day it drops down to 5Mbps, Wireless gets around 5Mbps in the daytime when most people are on. The ISP provided router doesn't support much flexibility options with Channels and such.

I also know that more people on the internet does slow it down but it shouldn't be dropping from 22 to 5.

Well there's nothing much you can do about it other than upgrading your bandwidth. Btw are you talking about Mbps or MBps?

5 Mbps is pretty slow,  so you get 2.75 MB/s High and 0.625 MB/s Low, I think you should upgrade your internet plan to a higher bandwidth.

This plan is currently the fastest we can get in our area, Bell said that we would be getting 25 Megabytes per second normally for 350gb of usage, then it would drop down to 15 Megabytes per second for unlimited. These are all previous speed tests done during the day and night.

I think our only option is to suffer until Starlink hits our area, or pester Bell about it 24/7

As you keep talking about when other people are on the WiFi during the day, are all these tests when nobody else is using it?
