8800GT high idle temps

Ar558a
Go to solution Solved by Pixelfie,

This thing is ancient. Probably failed with dust like Crownie said and dried thermal paste. Take off the cooler, replace thermal paste and make sure the fan & heatsink have no dust.

I have an old 8800GT in my second PC and despite it just sitting idle for like 3 hrs the GPU temps were at 68-70C which seems pretty high for idle.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks for the advice, I have taken the cooler off (fortunately just 10 phillips screws) blown out the fan and heatsink with compressed gas, cleaned the heatsink and GPU with isopropyl alcohol and repasted with arctic silver 5. Put it all back together (and firstly it still works) and after an hour at idle temps were 56C which while still slightly higher than I would like is way better than 70!
