What's a tech term you hate?

Wireless internet?

That would be incorrect - machines in LAN are also connected via Wi-Fi ...

I disliked the term also, but no better name has appeared.

I edit my posts more often than not

I meant the OG Pentium, like the 200MHz Pentium in my family's Gateway 2000 Windows 95 PC, not a modern Pentium.

Yeah, any time I tell someone "oh I raytraced my render" they go "no you didn't you have a GTX card"

CPU raytracing has been a thing for quite a while. Heck, you can even do that with a Pentium D.

and I have done it as a joke... Took like 20x as long as my Xeon but it worked

F***ing perfect lol

Wow - jealous.

Best Phenom I've got is a Phenom X4 9650 - first gen Phenom vs second gen, not much of an architecture difference but that's a big difference in clock, especially with yours being unlocked and mine not.

And the only motherboard mine will POST in broke a few months ago.

Doesn't Wi-Fi itself (not abbreviated) mean Wireless-Fidelity or some bull crap?

Wi-Fi... Altho that is trademarked.
It can correctly denote a wireless network connection. Even going as far to denote compatibility.

Aww im sorry for your board. Mine still works afaik, but has been replaced by a 1700X after being online for 4 years straight (and on 70%+ CPU usage). 😄

But its a beast tho. More on power-usage then actual speed but still.

it’s probably like Wireless internet wichcraft

I could use some help with this!

Yup, altho that didnt hold them back to actually use it. (Them being the Wi-Fi alliance.)

Quote

The name Wi-Fi, commercially used at least as early as August 1999, was coined by the brand-consulting firm Interbrand.

The Wi-Fi Alliance had hired Interbrand to create a name that was "a little catchier than 'IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence'."

Phil Belanger, a founding member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, has stated that the term Wi-Fi was chosen from a list of ten potential names invented by Interbrand.

The name Wi-Fi has no further meaning, and was never officially a shortened form of "Wireless Fidelity". Nevertheless, the Wi-Fi Alliance used the advertising slogan "The Standard for Wireless Fidelity" for a short time after the brand name was created

I'm at least happy we can run around saying wifi than running around like chicken and saying wireless-fidelity or what kind of witchcraft it's called

Maybe, but what if I have a bluetooth device with a password? some do.

Or my hotspot is on, which is its own seperate thing, it creates a wifi service off of celular. That has a password too.

I'd ask you for your bluetooth or hotspot password, respectively. I do that now anyway, in fact. I don't know of anybody who casually refers to them 'wireless', actually.

Well in all honesty its wireless network, thats correct.

People do call it wireless internet, erroneously ofcourse.

But worst is if they just call it wireless.

Then i just name a FM frequency to a (popular) radio station. "You wanted wireless, there you go! 102.2Mhz"

(Im mean directly translated from Dutch)

edit:

"Geef je draadloos wachtwoord..." Is absolutly cringeworthy as that means:
"Give me your wireless password..."
Le sigh. 😄

edit2: for the uninitiated, my passwords are not wireless. None of them... :old-laugh:

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

My board somehow died. After working fine for quite a while one day it just went belly up, killed one stick of ram, maybe the CPU, and a HD 4870 x2 (that was the sad part) - I resurrected the card in the oven but it's definitely not going to work forever. PSU still works absolutely find so that didn't cause it...

I have pitted my Athlon 64 against my Athlon XP... both midrange models from the series. But one is 64/32 and one is just 32 - interestingly enough the Athlon 64 actually does worse in x86 even though it's got the same core clock as the XP (2ghz)

Edit: both single core.

I wonder if there is a translation thing.  the term “wireless” is as old as Marconi. Possibly older.

It does mean something though.

Ray tracing is just the practive of tracing the rays of something and how they interact with real objects.

Real Time Ray Tracing, which is what nvidia and amd do now, is the idea of doing that in real time, 60 times a second

you mean G.I. where no where near it correctly.  for a long time. when normal not rt can look just as good to a point.

MSI x399 sli plus  | AMD theardripper 2990wx all core 3ghz lock |Thermaltake flo ring 360 | EVGA 2080, Zotac 2080 |Gskill Ripjaws 128GB 3000 MHz | Corsair RM1200i |150tb | Asus tuff gaming mid tower| 10gb NIC

Heh.  Once upon a time that was an absurdly fast machine.  The last Mac desktop I bought was an 840av that was terribly proud of its massive 40mhz
